“Okay, if you think he’s the one, you have Eric’s number. Text him his info.”

Ben pumps the air like he’s won the lottery. “I will.”

I laugh, then let out a long yawn. I glance at my phone and see it’s already after nine. I still have a bunch of fan mail to get to and I promised Mom I would call before I went to bed. We have to be up early to move to New Jersey in the morning—but I hate kicking Ben out. I’m having a nice time with him. It felt like my life was normal for a few sweet hours.

“Say no more. I’ll get out of your hair.”

I yawn again, then blush. “Sorry. I’ve been really enjoying myself; I swear.”

“I get it. Big rock star needs her beauty rest.”

He helps me put away the leftovers and then I walk him to the door.

“Tonight was fun. Don’t be a stranger, Birdie girl.”

“I’ll try not to. When the tour is over, maybe we can get some pizza in the actual pizza shop. I’ll fly out Wren,” I wink.

“I would love that. She would too. And I’ll send that guy’s info to Eric.”

“Thanks for always looking out, Ben. Talk soon.”

With one last bear hug, he leaves. I wait for him to disappear from view before closing the door and locking it. Tonight turned out to be relaxing and just what I needed. Maybe I’d even get a nice bodyguard out of it. If Ben likes him, I’m sure I will too. At least, I can hope. Things are looking up.

Birdie

Iopenthedoorto find Eric’s flaming red hair and brown eyes in my vision.

“Morning, B. Hope you slept well. Did your friend Ben spend the night?” He lets himself into my suite, looking around for any sign of him.

“Good morning to you too, Mr. Nosey. But no, he’s a friend. That’s all.”

“Well, that friend of yours did us a solid. We weren’t having any luck finding a bodyguard we liked, but he gave us a good referral.”

“Did you hire him?”

“I sent Gia to meet him just now. But I chatted with him on the phone late last night and looked over his resume. Seems like he’d be a good fit. He’s an ex-cop.”

“I’m guessing most bodyguards are ex-cops or military.” I pick up my mug of black coffee off the counter and take a sip.

“That’s probably true, but he seems cool. Got along with him for the ten minutes we talked. And, lucky for him, he didn’t give me a headache.”

I laugh. Eric has a hard time liking people right off the bat. He’s always suspicious of their motives and if they just want to know him to get close to the musicians he works with, myself included. Him liking the referral from Ben is a good sign.

“Anyway, I really came here to check on you. See how you’re doing. Need help packing?”

“You have better things to do than help me pack.”

“Shea may have threatened me. She said if I didn’t come help you, she’d make sure my mac n’ cheese stash would be missing on the tour bus. You know I need my fix.”

I bite my lip to keep a laugh at bay. My assistant, Shea, is only 22, but you would think she was a crotchety old lady. She runs my ship like the navy, and I’m grateful for it. I’m not good at schedules and organizing. Without her, my life would be horribly chaotic.

“I’ll keep her wrath away, and make sure your mac n’ cheese is left alone. I’m already packed. We were only here for 3 nights. I didn’t even take much out of my suitcase.”

“Okay, then we have some time to kill. Want to walk down and get a real latte from that fancy place on the corner? They have chocolate chip scones.”

I lift an eyebrow. “Do they have blueberry?” Eric gives me a ‘duh’ look and I grab my purse.
