“This is for Birdie Wilder,” the guy says, still not looking at us. His eyes are trained to the ground, like he doesn’t want us to be able to recognize him.

“Who are you?” Eric demands.

The guy doesn’t answer, instead he thrusts the paper at me again.

Eric snatches it before I can make a move. “Who are you?”

The guy shakes his head then turns and bolts. Eric makes to go after him, but I stop him by grabbing his shirt. “Leave it. It’s not safe.”

Eric looks pissed as hell, but he doesn’t go after him. Instead, he stashes the paper in his back pocket and pushes me forward. “We shouldn’t have come alone. Let’s get back before I regret my decision not to get the tour canceled.”

“Eric—”

“Don’t, Birdie.”

I stiffen. I hate mad Eric, especially when he’s mad at me. Which is rare. Shit, I screwed up. I shouldn’t have been this reckless given the circumstances, but I really thought we’d be fine. Thank God it was just some guy with a note.

Or could it have been my stalker? No, no. I don’t think it was. He was too timid. But that would mean the real creep is hiring people to help him do his dirty work. This is much worse than I thought. Suddenly a part of me is glad I have a bodyguard coming. The last thing I want is for Eric to get hurt trying to protect me. Dying or serious maiming isn’t part of his job.

As he pushes me toward the hotel, he beelines for the tour bus. “Get on the bus, Birdie. I’ll make sure your stuff comes down from the room.”

“I can do it.”

Eric rubs a hand over his face. “Please just get on the bus. I’ll take care of the rest.” He guides me to the door; our bus driver Joe is there loading gear and Kevin is off to the side saying goodbye to his boyfriend.

As Eric turns to leave, I stop him with my hand on his arm. “Give me the note.”

He goes still, turning back toward me. “We’ll read it later. Just, let me go get your things. I need to make some calls.”

“Are you going to tell the label?”

“I have too, Birdie. But I’m going to make sure that your bodyguard is at the hotel in Jersey as soon as possible. Tonight, if he can. This stalker is watching you too closely. That was scary as hell and you’re too important.”

My throat becomes thick with emotion. “Okay. I’ll stay on the bus.”

He nods roughly. “Kevin!” he yells as he walks off. “Keep Birdie company, will you? I’m going to round up her stuff and the rest of the band.”

“You got it, man!” I hear him answer.

I hold back tears. Let the babysitting begin.

Thisisinsane.Ihave no idea why the hell I agreed to this. Something must have happened between yesterday and this morning, and I need my damn brain checked.

I walk around my bedroom, pulling clothes out of my drawers and stuffing them into my suitcase. I’m thankful that I had the foresight to do my laundry the other day, or I’d have to find some time to do it on the road.

“Damn dude, didn’t your mom teach you how to fold clothes?”

I sneer at Ben, stuffing more clothes into the open case. He holds up his hands in surrender, “I got you a good job, dude. Lighten up.”

“You and Wren guilted me into taking it.”

“Dude, stop being so ornery. This is a great gig. You get to travel the country, stay in great hotels, eat good food and watch free concerts by one of the world’s most popular rock stars.”

“Yeah, but did you forget who the rock star is?”
