“Do you remember me coming to you last night?” I asked, hopeful she would recall my presence.

She shook her head and my heart sank. “No.”

It wouldn’t have mattered if I touched her then. She wouldn’t have remembered or recognized the man between her legs. I wondered how often in her past that was a reality. How many crawled between her thighs and took what they wanted without her consent?

In Wonderland, it was probably a daily occurrence.

Anger brimmed along the surface of my skin and I had to push down the urge to vindicate the broken creature in front of me.

“But, then again,” she continued, “there are shadows in my room every night. You would have blended right in.”

I frowned at her statement.

What kind of shadows lurked around and frightened Alice?

I wished I could protect her from those torturous souls, but then remembered I was as helpless as she was in that instance. The Cat had assured my impotence.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

She glanced down at her chains and tugged slightly on the metal. “I-I don’t know.”

Nodding, I scooted closer. The camera next to me was purposely turned off. I wouldn’t record our session today. I couldn’t expose her in that way, not after last night.

“You were screaming for hours,” I replied softly.

“They werehurtingme.”

“Who was?” Rage rose within me as I suspected the orderlies of tormenting her before I arrived.

“Their eyes were a bright yellow,” she described with a shiver. “He threw me in that hole with the snakes.”

“Snakes? Who threw you in a hole, Alice?”

“The Cat,” she spat with venom. “He said I needed to learn.”

Large teardrops fell down her soft cheeks and my heart ached for her suffering. What the hell had they done to her? These incidents she described weren’t a result of the drugs. No, these were specific and traumatizing memories that surged and rose to the surface in the middle of the night. This was a cross between fantasy and Wonderland, but all of it wasreal.

“Learn what, Alice? A lesson?” I was trying to remain patient, but my tone of voice said otherwise.

She jolted at my choice of words. “Lesson? Oh, yes. He said I needed to learn what it meant to be a part of Wonderland. The pain was a huge part of the pleasure I was to endure, and I needed to learn every aspect of it before I could truly be his.”

The growl in my throat escaped before I could censure my reaction. “What was his name, Alice?”

“I can’t remember!” She cried out, sobs wracking her body.

Fuck!

I’d pushed her too hard.

The last few sessions had been too intense, and the lack of drugs weren’t helping. If Dominic and his Organization knew I was betraying them, I’d be destroyed. I was putting my life on the line for this fragile girl and in a way, it was my vengeance for what they’d done to me.

I had to save at least one innocent soul.

Might as well be the tortured beauty I longed to set free.

“I’m sorry, Alice.” I soothed my tone to a rich timbre, something she seemed to respond well to whenever I spoke that way. “It’s alright. We can talk about whatever you want.”

Silence followed and I thought the session was over. She wasn’t going to cooperate, and I wasn’t going to force her. But then, her sweet voice filled the space as she began to recall her nightmares in vivid detail.
