How dare she?

Perhaps I was pissed that she wasn’t mine or maybe I wanted more than either of us could ever give. It was that singular raw need, so visceral and wild, that spurred my next thoughts into action.

Pulling up a chair beside her, I looked down at the fragile creature that had been left at my doorstep. Big blue eyes stared back without challenge, unblinking as apprehension clouded her features.

“What are you going to do to me?”

I smiled as I reached out and stroked her forehead, pleased she didn’t flinch at my touch. “I’m only going to help you remember, Alice.”

Her eyes roamed the office as she shifted. Her body was stiff and rigid as she lay back in the chair and perched like a bird ready to take flight. Her bare feet kept tapping at the seat rest on the other end. Her curiosity won out and she couldn’t resist taking the bait.

“How are you going to do that?”

“With this,” I calmly answered, lifting a mechanical pocket watch in front of her eyes as it dangled. The light caught and glinted off the smooth gunmetal cover. A long delicate silver chain was attached to the end of it, and as I clicked watch open, the skeleton keys began theirtick tockmotion, lulling her into a relaxed state of false security.

Her eyes fluttered as she sighed softly.

“This will help you relax, Alice.” She reached up, her fingertips slightly tracing the silver chain. “Focus on the hands as they sway,” I commanded, my voice low.

Her eyes began to follow the movement, locking on the rhythmic motion of the watch.

“Deep breaths, Alice. Feel yourself falling away. Let every part of your body, every muscle, relax one by one. Pretend you are weightless. First your fingers and toes. Followed by your arms and legs. Then finally the rest of your body.”

Her eyelids began to flutter as the deep resonating notes of my voice became a soothing lullaby.“Deep and deeper she goes. Where she stops, only I will know.”

The beast within delighted at my words.

This is what I mastered in. This was why I was brought into Wonderland. I was proficient in the artistry of Hypnosis, and my research had brought the attention of The Organization and the amusement of Dominic Chartreaux. He’d used my skill for his own twisted pleasures on multiple occasions. And now, it would benefit my own depravities.

Alice’s breathing had slowed and was now shallow enough to confirm the induction into that obscure state of consciousness that would enable me to control her. Her limbs finally relaxed, nearly melting into the plush cushions. My words and the combination of the watch had placed her in a full trance.

She was at my mercy. The urge to growl with triumph was nearly impossible to resist.

“Do you know who I am, Alice?”

“Doctor Coburn.”

“That’s right, Alice. Do you know why we are here?”

“You want to help me.”

The vulnerability in her voice was laced with the definitive truth. She trusted me.

“I’m the only one who can help you, Alice.”

She giggled and covered her mouth like a little child.

“Do you find this amusing?”

Instead of answering, she blurted, “you have a big hat on.”

I smiled at her silly description. Under hypnosis, some patients reverted far back into childhood. It was common to reach this place of untouched purity before any trauma was introduced into their life. A moment when safety, security, and innocence shielded their mind from depravity or corruption.

“I do?”

“Mmhmm, it’s pretty.”

Unable to help it, I laughed. “Good to know I wear hats in Wonderland. Will you take me with you this time, Alice?”
