Vile creature that he was, this was normal behavior.

“It seems you enjoy preying on the weak. Just like you did on your pretty wife. Isn’t that your specialty? Nothing to be ashamed of, we’re all here because of our talents, Doctor.”

My jaw clenched and I gripped the armrest, the wood creaking beneath my hand. He was instigating a reaction. This was his way of gaining the upper hand, but I wouldn’t let him win. If I laid one finger on him, I was dead. The orderlies only followed one mandate, and it was under strict orders from the Queen of Hearts. You touch a hair on Dominic Chartreaux’s head, and it would be your neck that stretched. More specifically, chopped off. She was rather fond of such gruesome acts. I wasn’t going to become an example.

“You do recall your pretty wife, don’t you, Doctor?”

I swallowed the bile that rose in my throat as I sat quietly, seething as he rose and slowly wandered over to the bay window. Lightning struck nearby, casting him into the light briefly before the shadows swallowed him up once again.

The man lived in darkness, made his home in the corrupt and vile world he built while spilling the blood of others.

“She was beautiful, wasn’t she? Your wife? I remember how she felt in my arms when she gave herself to me, the scent of roses in her hair as she begged to be mine. It was a shame she died so abruptly. An accident that could have easily been avoided if you’d just listened.”

Rage vibrated under my skin with every word he spoke.

“You never have been good at following orders, have you?”

I remembered her smile, my delicate Katrina. The gold in her hair glimmered brightly when she danced and her smile, it lit the room up whenever she entered. I should have done what I was told. I never should have tried to leave. But I had lost her at that point, and there was nothing else I wanted in life. He’d stolen the only thing that mattered to me, defiled it, and destroyed it.

He broke me that day.

I wanted to run, but there were always consequences when running away from Wonderland. Instead, I became lost in haunting memories.

I’d been seconds too late to save her. Dominic played with me, fucking Katrina as he choked the life from her body. I could still see the way her lifeless form hung, her unseeing eyes staring back at nothing. Empty. Dark. Within seconds, her life had been completely diminished of any light.

His upper lip curled in a wide sadistic smile that played on Dominic’s face while he yanked on the silver chain around her neck, snapping her esophagus as he released his orgasm and spilled inside of her still warm body. I would never forget the words that left his mouth when he was done, pulling out of her with satisfaction.

You’d never guess how good a corpse’s pussy feels tightening around your cock. Your wife was a good fuck, Doctor.

I had collapsed to my knees, silent tears falling from my eyes in shock and grief. Almost as if he was much farther away, I vaguely heard him pull up his zipper and make his way in my direction. Placing a hand on my shoulder, he leaned down and whispered in my ear, “The next time you try to leave, I’ll suck the soul out of you, but I’ll make sure to leave you alive long enough for you to feel every second of it slipping away. Her death falls in your hands, Doctor. Shame, I did love her so.”

Patting my shoulder with a mocking gesture, he left me there with my wife’s lifeless corpse hanging from the chains. For a full five minutes I didn’t move until I was certain that he was gone. The moment I could properly grieve, I screamed and roared my agony, banging my fists against the concrete floor over and over again. I’d crawled over to where she was, dragging my shaking hands over her body as I fought the urge to vomit, lifting the chains that marred her once perfect flesh. Bright purple bruises marred her skin from where he’d harmed and abused her repeatedly. All to teach me a lesson.

I cradled and rocked her for hours, her body growing cold in my arms. No one came in to check on us, no one cared if another woman was dead. It was all the same to those in Wonderland.Another corpse.

Another forgotten soul.

The memory faded as I looked upward, my eyes locking on that stupid, Cheshire grin. Dominic knew where I had gone, delighted in the fact that I had retreated back to that horrid and painful memory. He adjusted his pants in front of me, his erection proof that he got off on such despicable imagery.

As my thoughts cleared and I remembered Alice, I knew I wouldn’t let him murder another woman again. He couldn’t be allowed to rule Wonderland.

It was time for the king to lose his crown.

I was beyond the point of no return now, too deep in to care about how I would be taken down with him. All I wanted was to see that smug son of a bitch suffer.

Standing, I made it clear the conversation was over.

“I believe we are done here, Dominic.”

His eyes narrowed and I knew his anger was partially due to the fact that I wasn’t readily giving him the full satisfaction of breaking down as he would have liked, that I still fought against his control. I’d given him more than I wanted already, revealed far more than I ever intended. My pain was evident.

Instead of engaging him further, I pasted on a smile that I knew didn’t quite reach my eyes and I made sure he understood this meeting was over.

“I want her on the screen tonight.”

“I’ll do my best.”

He took the few remaining steps that separated us, standing toe to toe with me. “You do what I tell you to do,puppet.”
