He let out a low rumbling breath and came back to take his seat. Stooping, he retrieved the pen and notebook as our eyes met.

“I’m ready,” I signaled at the camera and he took a long moment to think before he shook his head.

“This will be a private session today, Alice.”

His jaw tightened slightly, and I knew something was wrong. If what I was thinking was true, then the Doctor was disobeying a direct order.

“What would you like me to talk about today?”

He watched my expressions and body language as an unspoken secret started to form between us. “Tell me more about your infamous Cat?”

“I don’t want to talk about him.” Enough of my time and energy had been spent on that vile creature.

“We need to find out who he is, Alice.Youneed to find out.”

The urgency in his voice made me quiver. Could it be he was really trying to help me? Not sabotaging my success as I earlier thought?

“Do you think I’ll ever get out of these chains, Zachary?”

His name felt unfamiliar and raw as it slipped from my lips. I wasn’t used to saying it and he most definitely was not used to hearing it. His eyes met mine and then drifted down to my chains.

“I don’t know yet, Alice. Only time will tell.”

Sighing, I knew there was only one way back into my memories. They’d been tainted recently but I had an odd sense that it was done purposefully.

He signaled to the tea that sat before me and I watched him as he nodded. The tea. That was the sole cause of my distress, yet it was the only way to bring me back into my past. It was the most thorough way to retrieve the complete truth. Instinctively, I knew that this trip was going to be my last. The final pieces of the puzzle were falling into place.

As I picked up the teacup and brought it to my lips, I lifted the china in a mocking toast.

“And down the winding road I go . . .”

Sometimes it only takes one second

To change the hands of time

If only that second was spent with you

The darkness would surely die

Amber sparkles glistenacross every surface and twinkle in hues of marigold, yellow, and warm honey. The heat of the sun bakes over every layer of my skin and sinks down deep, pooling internally as I feel each sunbeam breathe life into my shattered soul. My fingers spread wide as I lift my hands over my head and seek more of the luxurious comfort.

This moment is only fleeting. A cruel respite among the horrors of what is to come. I’ve been too long in Wonderland now not to expect that with each act of rare kindness there will be a thousand vicious and painful reminders that nothing endures but continual degradation.

There’s no balance here, no sense of moral aptitude. Right and wrong have no place in such a dark and miserable existence. I know this, and yet I dare to yearn for more.

If my Master ever knew of my internal desires, he would finish his threats and destroy me.

But I have a secret.

I’ve found my one tiny glimmer of hope in this unforgiving world.

A man whom I’ve only met once before.

My White Knight.

After our brief but sexually charged encounter, I didn’t think that feeling the gentle touch of a man would exist ever again. He just seemed to care. Whatever the reason, I long to feel his fingers caress my skin again, his lips trace patterns of sensual delight as they trail along my body.
