“Run off?” She knew he was alluding to something, but she couldn’t put her finger on it.

“You left Kelly and Karina to go after Hella in the forest, didn’t you?” His eyes narrowed.

“Oh, that.” Yeah, she did. “You have to understand that I thought I had no choice. I wanted to lead Hella away from here. I didn’t want anyone else to get hurt.” It turned out to be a poor decision considering Hella and Artem had every intention of hurting others.

He tightened his hold on her hand again. “You have to remember you aren’t alone anymore. From now on, come to me before you make any decisions like that.”

“So you can hide me in a bedroom and prevent me from helping?” She knew how his mind worked, the same as every vampire’s mind did when it came to their lifeblood. “No thanks.”

“No,Vioi.”His free hand brushed her cheek. “So we can be reckless together.” Eva perked up. She definitely didn’t expect to hear him say that. “You’ll never be alone again.” She wanted to believe what he said was too good to be true, but the more she thought about it, the more she recognized how true it was. She was no longer alone. And now, she would live long enough to enjoy the bonds she was creating with others. “I won’t force you to live your life with me, but don’t be fooled, I’m going to try like hell to prove to you that a life with me is a life worth living.”

Eva made a move to sit up again but he was quick to press her back down. “Not yet, and not because I’m preventing you from doing anything reckless. This is because you alreadydidsomething reckless and now you need to heal from it.”

She nodded, deciding he was right. Shewasalready incredibly tired. So she settled with simply clasping her free hand over his. “Darius, do you want to know what hurt the most when I thought I was going to die?” He leaned forward, intently listening. “It hurt to know I finally met someone worth loving and wouldn’t have a chance at living a life with him.”

His eyes widened, a smile forming on his face again. “Are you saying you love me?”

“Yes, Darius.” Now it washerturn to squeezehishand. “I love you.”

“And I love you.”

She broke out in laughter. “As if I didn’t already know that.”

He began laughing along with her. “And how long were you this confident about my feelings toward you?”

“When I saw you betraying Artem in my vision. Honestly, my vision didn’t even reveal that you were betraying him for me. I figured that part out on my own.”

“You’ve known since back at the fortress?”

“Yup, I’ve known for quite some time.” She proudly grinned up to him.

He laughed again, his laughter bringing her more joy than her favorite song could. She couldn’t wait for the sound of his laughter to light up her life for years to come.

“You’re full of surprises, you know that?” He told her.

“I guess it’s a good thing I now have time to keep surprising you.” Because she wasn’t going to die.

He bent down for kiss, but not before assuring her, “Averylong time.”

Grinning up to him she jokingly commented, “You saved my life how many times now? I think it’s about time I save yours.”

He quirked a brow, leaning towards her, but coming to a stop before he reached her lips. “How do you not know?”

“Not know what?”

“Your mother may have brought you back to life, but she was only giving you exactly what you deserved. I was dead for centuries,Vioi. But now, every time I look into your loving eyes or laugh at your spirited comments, I’m brought back to life. You saved my life countless times. It’s because of you, and only you, that I’m alive.”

Eva’s heart welled at his words. She never would have thought that while he had been saving her, she might have been saving him too. “So I’m not useless?” She always considered herself useless. It never occurred to her that she might have been helping others the entire time.

“You are many things, but useless is not one of them.” He finally bent in all the way, pressing his lips to hers.

To her amazement, she believed him. Trusting what he said felt effortless, which was an incredible feeling.

Not useless. She could get used to that.
