Sure, the last thing she wanted was to be bound to him, but that didn’t stop the undeniable effect he had on her. When her hands were pinned above her head, she could do nothing to prevent herself from imagining racy scenarios between the two of them.

There was no denying it, she wanted him.

But I refuse to be bound. No one would tie her down in life, ever. She was determined in this. She knew better. If she was this vampire’s lifeblood, he would want nothing more than to do exactly that.

He may be incredibly attractive, butno thank you.

Trying to bring herself back to reality and face the current situation at hand, she turned in the direction of the threatening voice from the alley.

Four sets of red eyes looked back at her.

Vampires.

Eva bounced off the wall. “Friends of yours, I assume?” She tried to hide any fear she was feeling. Shedidjust tell this man she could take care of herself, didn’t she? As she eyed the approaching men, she couldn’t help but think,I was so wrong.

He faced them, standing in a warrior-like stance. He was ready for battle. She, on the other hand, was not. Attention focused on the approaching vampires, he told her, “Just because we’re of the same species doesn’t mean I associate with them.”

“Noted.” She narrowed her gaze, peering through the darkness to get a better look at the approaching vampires. They were all equally large in size, though none of them could compare to the size of the vampire at her side.

Four against two. Honestly, she had to admit to herself it was more like four against one. Predicting anyone’s fortune wasn’t a skill one needed in battle. In the world of mortals - the world she had been living in for the last century - she faced no threats. Ifamortal threatened her, she was capable of beating them to a pulp. Easy.

In the world of unnaturals?

Let’s just say she had valid reasons for living among mortals.

Eva tried to imitate the vampire’s defensive stance. She only felt stupid for doing so. She was so far from a fighter.I fight with words, not fists.Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to help her now.

“How about we exchange names. You know, so I know who to call for when I’m being beaten to a pulp?” She asked the man who basically wanted to imprison her for eternity. “Nice to meet you, I’m Eva.” If four threats to her life weren’t sauntering toward her, she might have held out her hand for a handshake.

“Darius.” His response was bleak, his eyes still on the approaching vampires. “On the topic of things that will help us, it would be good to know your other two powers.”

She almost laughed. He was in for some disappointment. “Sorry to be a buzzkill, but I don’t have any others.”

“I’m not going to use this knowledge against you. Knowing will only help.”

“Oh, I didn’t think you were going to use this knowledge against me. I’m being totally honest. Unfortunately, you’re bound to live your life with the runt of the sorceress litter. Still want to live your life with me?”Say no, say no.

Ignoring her question he said, “If you’re lying to me, you will regret it later.”

“Let me tell you how much IwishI was lying to you.” Her life would’ve been much easier if she was born as she should have been - mortal. Instead, she was born…wrong.Even her mother thought so.

“So, you’re useless.”

“You sound like those bitches back in Norway,” she commented, trying not to remember the island she grew up in nor the sorceress living on it. “I’ll win any game of hide-and-seek.” She was a master hider.

His fists tightened as the vampires closed the distance between them at a speed so slow they might as well have been mocking them with their confidence.Deserved confidence,Eva thought. There were too many of them and she wasn’t going to be much of a challenge to them at all.

“Hide-and-seek isn’t going to help you now,” he spoke through gritted teeth. Despite the approaching threat, it seemed she still managed to get under his skin.

Good. The more he hated her, the less likely he was to take her.

“Stand behind me.”

Though every instinct told her she should listen to him, her stubbornness overpowered those instincts. No one told her what to do. “Rather not.”

“She’s fucking impossible,” she heard him mutter under his breath.

“You only just met me and you already think I’m impossible? Gee, you might be better off without me…”
