She trusts me.

Something similar to bile built up in his stomach. He knew exactly what he was feeling.

Guilt.

He shook away his shameful thoughts, knowing now was not the right time to dwell on future actions he would take. Right now he had one worry - keep Eva alive.

He really wished Eva hadsomesort of useful abilities.

The ability to tell the future did nothing but put her in harm’s way. Immortals wanted her to use that power more than she wanted to use it herself.

Needless to say, she had a better chance at living if she was a powerless mortal. Unfortunately, fate wasn’t kind to her.

The story of my life,he thought. They were two peas in a pod when it came to the way fate treated them.

He picked up his pace as he neared the elves, their heads peeking out from behind various palm trees.Time to show them why the name Darius Fischer is not one anyone forgets.

He came to a quick stop when he reached the nearest palm. An elf with slick blonde hair did a double take when she saw how near to her he was.

“Oh!” She gasped, not expecting him. Her eyes darted in the direction of her comrades.“He’s here!”She called out to them.

Those were the last words Darius would allow to leave her mouth.

“Yeah, he’s here,” Darius mocked as he placed Eva down.

In two quick moves Darius unsheathed his sword and tore it through her neck before she had a chance to react.

One down.

“Damn, you’re quick,” Eva commented.

“Stay back,” he warned Eva as he located the nearest elf.

“I can help you just fine. It’s not like they want me dead.”

He groaned in irritation. Now wasn’t the time to deal with Eva’s exuberant personality. Without taking his eyes off the elf that was now preparing to release his arrow, Darius told Eva, “Not gonna happen.”

He could hear Eva huff behind him as he raced toward that elf, reaching him before he had a chance to let his arrow fly.

“If I can’t help,” Eva called out to him from behind. “Make it fast, will you?”

Two down.“Halfway there, darling.”

“Thanks, sweetling.”The irritation in her voice was more than a little apparent.

He did exactly as she asked, he made it fast. The last two remaining elves didn’t know what happened before he struck them.

Four down.He placed his sword back in its sheath. “They’re dead,” he called back to Eva. “Are you in one piece?”

“Uh,” was all she said in response.

Something was wrong.

He whipped his head back in her direction just in time to witness her pull an arrow out of her shoulder, screaming out, “Shit! That hurt like hell,”as she did. He sprinted toward her, reaching for her shoulder to examine the wound.

Placing two hands around the wound in her shoulder he said, “The arrow pierced you.”

“No shit,” she groaned. “Gods, can I be any more useless?” She dropped the arrow to the ground. “This is why I live my lifein hiding.I know I’mno match against all these immortals. I’m fucking useless.”
