Stupid, stupid, stupid!

They came to a stop in front of large doors metal doors, both vampires pushing them open. A massive hall greeted her beyond the doorway. Crimson flags hung the length of the hall on either side of her. About a hundred vampires stood beneath those flags, all their eyes on her. A few vampires sat on second floor balconies, looking down at her smugly. Judging by their attire, she knew they held a higher status here than those standing below.

She had to laugh. Yesterday, she met her first vampire. Now, she was surrounded by them.

Straight ahead of her sat a man on a throne of what looked like…bones. She assumed he was the big bad man she should be scared of. Yet as she looked into his blood red eyes, framed by hair as pale as death, she felt nothing except more anger directed toward herself.

Stupid, stupid, stupid!

“Ah, is this the soothsayer I’ve been waiting for?” He asked, casually leaning against his throne. When he lifted a finger, urging those holding her to come forward, they did so immediately.

Despite the number of unnatural beings in the room, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. She could hear nothing but the clicking of their feet against the stone as they walked forward.

When the vampires at her side came to a stop before the throne they released her, taking a few steps back.

She stretched out her arms. Those vampires seriously didn’t have to grip her so hard.

Deafening silence ensued as the man on the throne stared at Eva, clicking his fingernails against the arms of his throne.Click, click, click…It was so maddening Eva finally decided to speak up to put the silence to an end. “I’m Eva. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking to?”

“Artem,” he said, a sly grin slowly revealing itself. “I’m hoping our relationship will be a pleasant one.”

The nerve of this man.

Did he really expect her to getalongwith him? “Considering you already had me dragged away from my home, I highly doubt it. I have no reason to like you.” She heard several shocked gasps around her, followed by hushed whispering.

Eva was no stranger to evil. In her experience, every sorceress that existed was evil. Her own mother disowned her without a second thought. This encounter with Artem? It was just an addition to her long list of encounters with evil unnatural beings.

Bring. It. On.

The grin on Artem’s face remained steady. “I suppose I can’t blame you, it was a poor introduction.”

Eva nodded. “If you wanted to use me for my abilities, you could’ve just asked me nicely.”

“And what would you have said?”

Considering Eva didn’t use her powers foranyoneher answer would’ve been a resoundingno.“You want the truth?” He gave one nod of his head. “Very well - I would’ve told you ‘No fucking way.’”.

“What reason would you have to refuse sharing your gift with me?”

“That’s an easy one. Other than the fact that I don’t like you, I don’t share my gift withanyone.”

He continued grinning, amusement trickling into his expression. “You’re quite an entertaining one, aren’t you?” He said as if she was nothing more than a circus act. “I’m sorry you feel that way about me, but I can assure you that one way or another, you will share your gift with me.”

“I won’t. Ican’t.”Artem probably wanted her to use her abilities often, more often than she was capable of. She couldn’t use her abilities more than once a week, her body fell too ill for too long for her to be capable of that. Even if she limited the use of her powers to once a week, that would mean perpetual sickness for her.

No thanks.

Artem leaned forward, resting his chin against his hand. “Why’s that? Please, share,” he urged her to continue speaking with the wave of his hand. But before Eva could say anything, his attention was momentarily diverted, his eyes focusing on something behind her. He sat up straight, his body language giving off major vibes that he was looking at something he definitely didn’t want to see.

Curious, Eva looked behind her.

Darius and his friend, Gedeon, stood at the entrance way to this fortress. Darius looked…angry.

That makes two of us.

“Darius,” Artem didn’t sound pleased. “I can’t thank you enough for delivering this soothsayer to me. Please, you have no need to listen in on this. Go enjoy yourself. We will talk later.”

Eva turned back to Artem, trying to read him. He was definitely upset. She couldn’t understand why
