Darius held Eva tightly against his chest. Her eyes were closed, and she seemed to be on the verge of sleeping.Exhaustion.She explained the effects of using her powers to him before. He had believed everything she said, but he didn’t realize it was this bad.

She can’t even open her eyes…

Darius shook his head, looking up to Artem. “Was her fortune not good enough?” She used nearly all the energy she had to give him exactly what he wanted, and he wasn’t pleased.

He’ll never be pleased.

“My besting someone who will threaten this castle isn’tnews,my friend. I do exactly that every week. Let her know she will have to come to me with something better next week or I’ll get rid of her.”

“When you say get ridof heryou mean…” Darius wasn’t sure why he asked, he already knew exactly what Artem meant.

“I certainly don’t mean I’ll let her go off on her own merry way.” Artem squeezed the bridge of his nose, clearly agitated. “You convince her to do her job and I’ll allow you to keep her company. I’ll allow her tolive.”

Darius’ eyes widened. Artem was going to allow Eva to stay with Darius? That meant everything to him. He planned to do whatever he needed to make her as comfortable as he possibly could.

I will not allow her to break,Darius determined.

Artem sat up, his eyes pinned on Darius. “Go now, to the dungeons. Before I change my mind.”

“To the dungeons?” Darius didn’t understand. As long as she was being watched, what difference did it make if she resided in the dungeons or not? “She isn’t your prisoner.” She was doing him a favor.

“I suppose she isn’t just yet,” Artem slumped back into his chair, boredom seeming to overcome him again. “Bring her to your quarters.” He shooed them away once more. When Darius, happy with what Artem told him to do, began to walk off with Eva, Artem decided to add one last comment. “But Darius,” Artem began, and dread filled Darius. He knew allowing Eva to stay with him was too good to be true. “If you fail me, Eva won’t be the only woman in your life who will suffer.”

He was talking about Karina. Artem always threatened him with Karina - his greatest weakness.

Darius turned to look at Artem. “Where is she? I did what you asked of me. Show me she’s safe.”

Remaining uninterested, Artem motioned for someone to come forth. Darius looked in the direction of the parting crowd, moving aside to give space for someone to walk forward.

Karina.Relief flooded through him. She was safe. For now.

“Keep your word and she will remain unharmed. You know I always keep mine.”

Out of the thousands of horrible traits Artem had, Darius could point out a single positive one - Artem always stuck to his word. Always.

Karina meekly smiled Darius’ way as she mouthed, ‘I’m okay’.

Darius determined she was okayenough. Karina was never completely okay.

“Now go,” Artem shooed him off again.

This time Darius obliged. “You’re going to be fine, Eva,” he told the woman in his arms.

Surprisingly, she found the strength to respond. “I suppose you expect me to forgive you.”

She was pissed at him, deservedly so.

“No, I don’t expect you to forgive me.” He didn’t, but he’d be damned if he didn’t help her through the hell he tossed her into.

“You’re right to not expect that.” Her eyes were still closed as she spoke. “I’d die before I ever forgave you.”

And he’d die before he’d watch her life taken from her.

In other words, they were both fucked.
