She pouted, tightening her white silk robe around her chest. “They would have if I wasn’t missing my favorite vampire so much.”

“When you say things like that, I begin to believe it,” Darius joked.

“We’ve been friends for far too long and have been through far too much to lie to one another,” she told him, hinting to times long ago, back when she saved him from starvation time and time again. “I will always be truthful to you, and I will always have your back. You are the best warrior for a reason, no?” Long ago, Lila begged Artem to allow Darius to prove himself as a warrior.

Because of her, Artem gave him a chance.

Because of her, Darius proved himself and was able to pull both himself and his sister out of slavery.

“I’m hoping you still appreciate my influence with those high class bastards.” She winked at him.

“Sometimes I might get jealous.”

“Not today?” She asked, knowing he was sent on a mission to locate his lifeblood.

“Not today.” Darius was never anything but honest with her.

“Do you want to talk about it?” She asked, and he knew she was a good enough friend to sit by his side and listen to his woeful tales. He might have decided on disclosing everything to her if he wasn’t so hungry.

“Right now, I’m starving.” He needed to get his mind off Eva and feed.

An ungodly grin that was both sweet and seductive spread across Lila’s face. “Say no more.” She unraveled her robe, letting it all fall to the ground, revealing that she wore nothing underneath. “Tell me what you want,” she pushed back her hair, showing off the side of her throat. “I aim to please.”

Darius’ fangs grew at the sight of her pulsing neck. He was long overdue for a drink.

Taking a step forward and shutting the door behind him he said, “That, my friend, you always do.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Eva Maas

Darius didn’t return that day.

In fact, days passed since he stormed out of the room and away from Eva, which perplexed her. Wasn’t thishisroom? Did he truly despise her presence so much he’d forgo sleeping in his own bed night after night?

She guessed so.

Eva assumed she should be glad that she was given time to herself to heal. Unfortunately, how she believed she was supposed to feel and how she actually felt were not the same. Now that she had a brief glimpse at what it was like tonotbe alone while healing, she wanted company. She wantedhiscompany.

She hated to admit it, but she was pleasantly surprised to see Darius when she first woke up. She didn’t want to be alone again.

“I guess some people are just meant to be loners for eternity,” she whispered to herself, pouting. She never liked living her life alone. But for some reason, being alone the last few days had been especially difficult for her.

Because Darius’ company is growing on me,she told herself. He reallywas.

At least Eva was feeling much better physically, having recovered almost completely over the last several days. She was feeling so much better, in fact, that she began pacing around the room. It wasn’t much, but it was better than lying in bed all day.

When a knock sounded on her door, she tried to keep her heart from jumping with joy. It’s probably just another servant coming to bring me food.

“Come in,” she called out, knowing that whoever was on the other side would walk in whether she allowed it or not. Her words meant nothing.

When the door squeaked open, a petite, frail looking blonde with large eyes peaked inside. This wasn’t one of the vampires who had been coming into this room to serve her food. This was someone new.

“Hi Eva, it’s Karina. I’m Darius’ sister.”

Eva raised a brow. She wasn’t aware Darius had a sister. “Nice to meet you,” Eva mumbled.

Nice to meet you.Eva wanted to laugh at herself. How charming.
