Eva could understand, to an extent. She watched enough movies to know what the love for another, whether a family member or a romantic interest, drove people to do. Knowing Darius betrayed Eva to save someone he loved was assuring. He wasn’t as horrible as she thought. “I understand.”

“Can you find it in yourself to forgive him?”

That was something Eva couldn’t do. “You’re asking too much of me.”

Karina sighed. “My brother has done everything to keep me safe his entire life. I was angry with him for it many times, but never as angry as I am with him now.”

Eva didn’t understand. “Why are you angry with him? You’re safe now.” And she had someone who loved her wholly. Something Eva would never understand.

Karina shot her head in Eva’s direction, reaching for Eva’s shoulders as if her life depended on it. “Because I’mnotsafe. As long as we’re here, I never will be. And this time, he’sruinedbecause of what he did. He’s miserable because of what he did to you, do you understand? I’m the one who has to live with the guilt. If it wasn’t for me, he may finally know happiness.”

Was she blaming herself for Darius’ actions? This girl wasn’t a vampire. She couldn’t be. She reminded Eva too much of an angel. “Karina,” Eva grabbed Karina’s extended arms in an attempt to calm her down. “Don’t blame yourself for this. This isn’t your fault. You have to know this isn’t your fault.”

“If I wasn’t a part of his life, he would’ve lived a happy one with you years ago, back when he first saw you.” Darius had known she existed for years? This was news to Eva.

“He knew I was his lifeblood all that time?” Impossible. Vampires didn’t stray from their lifebloods. Yet somehow, he did.

Karina nodded. “He had to stay far away from you for my sake, and now he’s done something irrevocable… for me.” A single tear trickled down her cheek. Eva was shocked to hear what Karina was telling her. Was it possible Darius wanted a happy life with Eva, only he couldn’t have one because he needed to keep his sister safe from Artem? Somewhere within her, a slither of hope rose.He doesn’t despise me.“I hate seeing him this miserable. I can never take back what he did to you, but I was hoping I could at least…”

“Get me to forgive him.” Eva understood why Karina came to her now.

Karina dropped her arms, looking to her feet as she nodded.

Eva didn’t believe she could forgive Darius, but she could at leastpretendto. For Karina’s sake. “Honestly,” Eva decided on attempting to lighten the mood. “I think I’m more upset that he left me alone in this room for so long more than anything else.” It was partially true. Evawaspissed that she was left alone for so long.

“He was only trying to respect your space. You led him to believe you didn’t want anything to do with him, so he listened.”

Eva opened her mouth to argue over what Karina had just told her, but shut it before saying anything.I did, didn’t I?Why did Eva expect Darius to return to her despite her obvious opposition on the matter?Because I can’t stop thinking he’s a horrible guy.

Karina looked up to Eva, the tears making her unusually large eyes appear even larger. “Can you forgive him?”

Eva wasn’t going to lie to this girl. “I can try to. Iwilltry to.”

Karina almost smiled. “Thank you,” she whispered.

Artem was destroying this girl. He was destroying everyone in this fortress. He was the definition of an evil being. Eva knew evil beings well and she hated them with all her heart.

“I’ll try to on one condition.”

Karina looked confused. “What is it? Anything you ask, I’ll do it.” Just as her brother would do anything for her, it seemed she would do anything for him.

“I need you to help me make Artem suffer.” Someone like him didn’t deserve happiness. After seeing Artem’s future, Eva knew Artem was destined to suffer, but she didn’t know how long they had until that fortune came to be. Judging by how ruined by him Karina already was, Eva didn’t want to prolong his inevitable fate. She needed to save this girl from him now.

Artem needed to suffer sooner than later.

Unfortunately, the sooner her vision came to pass, the sooner she would die.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Eva Maas

“You want to… kill Artem?” Karina was almost at a loss for words.

“Mhmm.” Artem was a wicked being. Eva had every intention of speeding up his death. She might have witnessed him on the brink of death in the future, but she didn’t witnesswhenthat would happen. It could be centuries from now.

The girl in front of her, someone much sweeter than Eva had ever been, was suffering at the hands of Artem. Eva had no doubt others were also suffering because of his vile actions. It was time to put those actions to an end.

Only, Eva had to thinkreallyhard about what she was going to do to stop Artem. She was far from strong, her sorceress powers useless when it came to her own safety.
