He came to a stand, his body shaking. “Youtestme!”

She did it. She broke him in front of everyone. Yes, even the foreign sorceress could get under his skin.

“Do I?” She asked, feigning innocence. “I swear it wasn’t my intention.” It totally was. “I’m just so intimidated by you I don’t know what to say. Standing in your presence is truly such a gift.”

Remain calm, let him look the fool.

He must have realized what she was doing, because he ran his hands over his black pants and sat back in his throne, trying to look as composed as he possibly could, though he was far from it. He broke, if only briefly, and everyone saw it.

Hopefully, everyone one seeing they had no reason to fear him. No one was invincible.

“My sweet soothsayer,” he spoke, his voice strained. “It is me who is gifted by your presence.”

Eva continued smiling his way. Deciding she did enough destruction for now, she asked him, “What is it that I can help you with today?”

“You know exactly what you can do for me.” His tone grew dark.

She dreaded what was about to happen to her, but knew there was no way out of it. “Ask me anything your heart desires,” she quickly mumbled, reciting what she told most of her clients when they came to her for psychic readings.

Seeming to relax himself, he began tapping his nails again.

Click, click, click.

If anything was going to drive Eva mad today, it was the sound of that.

“If you lie to me, I will find out,” he warned.

“I don’t plan on it.”

He nodded, though he didn’t seem convinced. “Tell me if anyone I trust plans on betraying me anytime soon.” He looked behind her, his attention zoning in on Darius. When he looked back at her he said, “Do not lie to me to protect those you love. Iwillfind out the truth, and you will be sorry.”

Eva laughed, pointing a thumb behind her. “You think I’m going to do anything to protecthim? The creature whobrought me here? No, never. As much as I clearly don’t like you, I like him even less. If I see him in my vision, you’ll be the first to know.”

He seemed pleased with what she said, relaxing against his chair for the first time since she arrived. “Very well,” he waved, “Go on.”

“First I have to get a good look at those you trust most.” He raised a brow, not seeming to understand. Letting out an aggravated sigh, she told him, “If I see the face of your betrayer in my vision and Idon’trecognize it, how am I supposed to know if it’s someone you trust?”

“Hmm,” he slowly nodded, seeming to agree with her. “Very well.” He nodded his head to the crowd and various men stepped forward. “These are my greatest warriors,” Artem told her as she scanned their faces, trying to put them all in a vault in her mind as quickly as she could. “Oh, how can I forget? My greatest warrior stands behind you, though I believe you already knew that.”

She didn’t know Darius was Artem’sgreatestwarrior, but she picked up enough to recognize how important Darius was around here.

“All the same.” She tried to be sure to show no emotion when it came to any talk of Darius, because she lied when she said she didn’t care about him. If Darius appeared in her fortune, she wouldn’t give him up.

Giving every man one last look she said, “Alright, I believe I’m ready.” When she said this, the men stepped back, disappearing into the crowd.

Artem looked at her with wonder as she raised her hands over her chest, suddenly incredibly aware of Darius’ presence right behind her. She was thankful for it. She knew he’d be there for her if she collapsed.

More likewhenI collapse.

She spun her hands in wide, circular motions, streaks of blue seeping from her palms, rapidly growing, rapidly spinning. As she worked her hands the wispy globe she created grew in size until it was large enough for a scene to play out within its blue gleam.

She zoned in on the scene playing in front of her until it took over her consciousness, entrancing her completely. Then, no one was in the room with her. She was floating in a black void, given nothing to do but watch Artem’s future play out in front of her.

Artem’s eyes were wild, his hair an absolute mess. “He was my best man! I gave him everything!” Seeming to be unable to control himself, he began tossing furniture across the room while simultaneously crashing just about any fragile thing he could get his hands on. “The bastard deceived me!”

Another body came into view. He was screaming at someone. When the body became recognizable she realized he was screaming at Darius’ friend, Gedeon.

“Vampires are deceiving creatures. You shouldn’t be surprised by his actions.” Eva recognized that voice. It was Gedeon’s.
