How could she when sleep was the only thing she wanted? “No,” she shook her head and began to let darkness to overtake her.

Before sleep overcame her, she heard Darius say,“So help me, I’ll make sure you regret saying that!”He was driven mad with the need to keep her alive, she knew that without a doubt.

That feels nice, she thought, having never known compassion before. If she wasn’t so tired, she might have smiled. Alas, she wanted nothing more than to sleep.

So she slept.

Chapter Thirty-One

Darius Fischer

Darius gripped Eva tighter in his arms as sleep took a hold over her. She was going to die because of him. He did what no other vampire had done before. He killed his lifeblood. If it wasn’t for him, she’d still be living in Miami’s warm weather.

No, she’d be dead,he thought, reminding himself of the unfavorable situation she had found herself in a moment before he arrived. Everyone in the unnatural world wanted her for some reason or another and she was defenseless.

If he got her out of here alive, he’d make sure she’d never be defenseless again.I’ll do everything in my power to protect her.

“How are we getting out of here?” He asked his sister as the two of them continued to rush forward. He couldn’t remember the last time he had asked his sister for help in anything.

In fact, he couldn’t even remember the first.

But she had the key to Eva’s cell.Darius couldn’t even retrieve that. He supposed his never asking Karina for help in the past was his own fault, not a fault of hers. She was always his little sister, despite her being over half a millennium old.

Now he only wondered how she managed to get the key in the first place. When he asked she told him, “A conversation for another time.” He had every intention of bringing that conversation up again in the future.

“Don’t you know your own home? There’s a hidden door down here that leads out to the tarmac.”

He had absolutely no idea about that door.

She took his lack of response as an answer on its own. “I thought so. Well, while you’ve been out running errands for Artem I’ve been spending my time eavesdropping.Andexploring. I quite literally know every crack and crevice in this place.”

“That would’ve been useful to knowbeforewe decided to leave this place.” Yes, their plan was to retrieve Eva and then… escape. Something they never had the courage to do before.

Now they had no choice.

She slowed to a stop, telling him, “You never asked.”

Touché, Karina, touché.

Slowing behind Karina, Darius looked down to Eva. Her breathing was slow, her face pale. “Hold tight,Vioi.Just a little longer.” Hehopedit was only a little longer. He was more than aware that they were headed out into the brisk mountain air.

“It’ll take a minute for us to get to the nearest jet. Maybe two. Hold her tight until then.” Karina told Darius, as if reading his mind.

Darius nodded, astounded by Karina’s assertiveness. This was a new side to her. He had to admit, he liked it.

He took his shirt off while keeping Eva in his arms, wrapping it around her chest. Despite moving her around, she didn’t wake up.

Not good.

“Why are we headed to a jet?” Darius was capable of many things. Flying was not one of them.

His sister began threading her fingers through the cracks in the walls, her attention seeming to be focused on every little detail in front of her. He assumed she was searching for the hidden doorway she just told him about. “Then I’ll fly us out of here.” She spoke with such a profound sense of confidence it took Darius off guard.

He was beginning to think he didn’t know his sister at all

Darius stared at Karina in disbelief as she found a nick in the wall. “Ah,” she said as she slid open the camouflaged door, revealing aged steps leading up to the dark night. Thecolddark night. She then turned to Darius and said, “I’m flying that plane. I’ve trusted you all my life. Now it’s time you trust me.”

“Why are you helping us? You’re putting yourself in danger.” Her safety had been the sole focus of his entire existence. Yet now he was willing to let her risk it for someone he just met?
