She was now constantly on edge no matter how much she tried to relax herself.

“Maybe you’ll feel safer with that vampire friend of yours?”

“Who, Darius?” Eva asked, forcing herself to look away from the window for the first time in nearly an hour.

Kelly nodded, taking a seat on the sofa across from Eva.

Where is he?He and Karina had made their way to their guest rooms as soon as they arrived at Castle Brannack. Eva on the other hand became entranced by the first window she came upon. It really was beautiful here, and so unlike Miami. Miami was beautiful in its own way, but these mountains were foreign to Eva. They bewitched her.

Eva wanted to deny that she would feel safer if Darius was with her. But truthfully? She couldn’t. Kelly was right. Evadidfeel safer with him at her side. Now that he wasn’t, she realized she was afraid. He’ll be back. Any minute now…Eva eyed the doorway leading into this room, expecting him to suddenly appear.

No dice.

As if reading Eva’s mind, Kelly said, “He’s not going to be gone long. He was watching you like a hawk the entire trip over here.” She brought up the short drive from the pub to this estate, which they called Castle Brannack.

Eva shrugged, attempting to act as if she could care less about where he was. Eva might have just realized she wanted Darius at her side, but no one needed to know that. “Doesn’t really matter. It’s not like I’m waiting for him.” She totally was.

The look Kelly gave Eva said she wasn’t buying it. “You didn’t already forget how I met you two, did you?”

No, Eva didn’t forget. How could she forget meeting Kelly while in the throes of lusty passion?

“We have fun.” Eva tried downplaying what Kelly witnessed, her face growing hot at the memory. “That’s all.”

“You certainly do,” Kelly agreed. “But I’m not stupid. I already told you I see the way he’s been watching you. It looks like much more than fun.”

“For him.” That was a total lie. It was more than fun for her as well. But did that matter? She couldn’t have a future with him. Other than the fact that being bitten by a vampire scared her shitless, she was going to die, and probably soon. She didn’t have time to hope for a bright tomorrow with Darius, because tomorrow wasn’t in the cards for her.

Was Eva scared of dying? Absolutely. It was probably why she was having difficulty looking away from the window. Her death was around the corner, and it terrified her. But at least she wasn’t going to leave anyone behind. She hadn’t built relationships with anyone during her life. No one would mourn her death. Life would go on. Everyone would be okay.

Darius and Karina might. The thought crossed her mind.

Having been on the go since she met Darius, she never stopped to think about how the two of them forming a relationship may hurt him.

Despite everything, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt him. He was the first person in her life to show he cared about her. He didn’t deserve to hurt.

“It doesn’t matter. The two of us would never work.” It was an impossibility, though Eva wished it wasn’t.

“That’s what I thought when I met Sebastian,” Kelly mentioned the large man that was very obviously in love with her.

“This is different. Trust me.”

“You want to try explaining?”

How could Eva explain without giving the most important detail away? Eva didn’t want anyone to know she was going to die soon. It wasn’t worth sweating over. Her death also meant Artem’s demise. She saw it herself. No one would understand now that her prediction was a good thing, especially not Darius. So she decided it was best to keep it secret. “For starters, I’m his lifeblood.”

“You don’t look happy about it. Well, at least notnow,”Kelly joked,, her tone indicating that she was alluding to the revealing position she caught the two of them in earlier.

“Yeah, that was pretty hot, wasn’t it?”You’re welcome for the show.

Kelly laughed, waving her hands in the air as she said, “Not going to deny it.” Her tone quickly changed, “But on a more serious note, why don’t you look happy about it? You are obviously attracted to him.”

How could Eva be happy about something that was doomed to end in tragedy? It didn’t matter how much he was growing on her. The two of them could never be.

I finally started living right before dying. Fitting. Her life was a tragedy.

Eva decided to go with the best explanation she could think of without revealing too much. “For starters, he’s a vampire. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been living with humans the last hundred years or so.Notunnatural beings.” And now she was surrounded by them. It was strange how life worked.

“Let’s not forget I wasn’t immortal untilafterI met Sebastian. If anyone is going to be more uncomfortable around unnatural beings, it’s me. We worked out.”
