Due to the fact that nearly everyone hated her predictions, and the fact that looking into the futures of others took so much energy it drained her for days, Eva eventually stopped using that power.

She refused to use the only power she was given, no matter how many women asked her to wield it.

It didn’t take long for her community - filled with power hungry and vicious women - to despise her. Even her mother was willing to make Eva pay the price for not using theonlypower she was given.

And her father? He died before Eva was born.

With no other option, Eva ran. She ran across the Atlantic and found peace in Miami. Completely alone and totally content.

Well, as content as one living on their own, eternally, could be.

“I’m happy here,” Eva tried convincing herself, leaning into the overly adorned chair she was sitting on.

When her assitant, Caroline, a young woman with scraggly hair and far too large glasses, walked into her room and said, “Someone here wants to see you,” Eva nearly lost her head.

“I’m done for the day. Appointments only. Tell them to make an appointment for another day.” Despite not using her powers she was still drained. Needy humans were relentless and incredibly tiring.

“I did,” Caroline softly spoke. “She doesn’t seem… natural.”

That was all Eva needed to hear to sit upright in her seat. “Why is that?” Miami wasn’t a popular city among unnatural beings. It wasnothingcompared to the unnatural hubs of New York City and London. Needless to say, her assistant claiming someone who was standing just beyond the curtains appeared unnatural was more than a little alarming.

What was an unnatural being doing here and why? Hopefully Caroline was overreacting. Though she wasn’t one to overreact.

“Because she killed my mouse.” Eva wanted to roll her eyes, having no idea why Caroline loved that mouse of hers as much as she did. Granted, Eva allowed her to keep it in the front office. It added a bit of mystery to her physic business. “With hereyes.”

Eva didn’t want to believe Caroline, except for the fact that Caroline lived off logic and reason. If she believed this woman killed her mouse with nothing but her eyes, she probably did.

“Did she give you a name?” Eva wearily came to a stand, placing her hands on the clothed table.

The lilac sheets behind Caroline opened and a familiar face peaked in. “It’s Hella, my sweet niece” the woman said, stepping forward. Eva tried to hide her surprise when her mother’s older sister walked into the room. “It has been far too long, has it not?” She had an aged appearance, unfortunately being one of the oldest women on the island when they were frozen into immortality. That didn’t make her any less attractive. With striking red hair and eyes that glowed like embers, she was quite a catch. Though, having gone through hell and back during her time with the pirates as a mortal, she refused to allow another man to touch her. As far as Eva knew, once Hella became immortal, no man had.

Eva tried to keep her outward cool, despite the fact that she was internally losing her mind. She had evaded the sorceresses for so long. Why were they searching for her now? “What do you want?” Eva asked, motioning for Caroline to leave. “We’re done for the day.”

Caroline nodded, quickly comprehending that she should be far away from this room.Smart girl.“See you tomorrow?” She asked Eva.

“Yes. Tomorrow.”At least Eva hoped she’d be here tomorrow.

Caroline was out the front door before Eva even finished speaking.

“It’s not whatIwant, it’s whatweneed, you see.” Typically, Hella wasn’t talking for herself but for their entire fucked up community.

“And what do you all need?”

“Word of the existence of a soothsayer has passed among the immortal species of our world. It seems you’re in high demand. Everyone wants to use you.”

“Lucky me.” Eva pretended this news didn’t bother her, though it really did. Immortals were relentless beings. The things they would do to bend Eva to their will… Eva needed to run. Feigning a calmness that was long gone, she told Hella, “I’ve been warned, thank you. Now go about your day. I’m sure you have much more pressing matters to attend to.”

Hella frowned, slowly making her way around the table Eva stood at, her slick hair framing her hostile expression.

A predator stalking its prey.

The last thing Eva wanted to be today was anyone’s prey.

“I don’t think you understand why I’ve been sent here.”

“So it’s not to warn me of a possible attack on my life?” Eva took weary step to the side, grinding her hips against the circular table as she did.

“We can’t risk anyone in the unnatural world usingourpowers against us. My sweet niece, I’ve been sent here to kill you before they do.”
