“You’re not going to die. I won’t let that happen to you.I won’t allow it.” He couldn’t hide his agony, and Eva couldn’t bare it.

This was exactly what she didn’t want to hear him say. His hope was misplaced. There was no winning in a fight against fate.

The realization of her tragic fate finally hitting her completely, she broke down.

At last, she found happiness. Unfortunately, she could do nothing but dream of having found it at a time before it was already too late.

Chapter Forty-Eight

Gedeon Varga

Trembling, Gedeon held the phone Karina had once given him in his hands. “Dammit, Karina!”He cursed her for her stupidity. Why did she have to share her location with him?

Karina was always up to date on current trends, constantly finding ways to leave Artem’s fortress for a bit without being caught. Because of this she was able to acquire a smartphone for both herself and Gedeon.

Fuck.

Why did she have to make it so easy for him to find her?

Thankfully, he was standing in the privacy of his own, bland room. No one needed to know where Karina, her brother, and his mate were.

Not yet, at least.

Unfortunately, the screen in his hand showed Gedeon exactly where they were - in the states.

Gedeon was hoping he wouldn’t be able to find them after Artem ordered him to do so. If Gedeon couldn’t find them, he wouldn’t be faced with the difficult task of deciding whether or not to keep this knowledge hidden from Artem.

How can I hide this from Artem? If Gedeon chose to keep this information hidden and Artem found out, Gedeon might be sent to work in the fields for eternity. The thought of eternal suffering sent shivers down his spine.

How can I give away my best friend, his lifeblood, and his sister?Darius was the reason Gedeon was no longer working on those hellish fields.

One day, after dueling with and killing another for food, Darius approached Gedeon. Apparently, he had been watching Gedeon and had already spoken to Artem about Gedeon’s impressive talent. Darius was able to convince Artem that Gedeon would be an incredible asset on the battlefield, ultimately freeing Gedeon from hell.

From that day on, Darius trained Gedeon to be one of the best, preventing Gedeon from returning to the hellish place where his immortal life began.

Darius always believed Gedeon was a good man.If he ever knew who I truly was, he would’ve given up on me years ago.Gedeon thought. He was far from a good man.I led my family to their deaths to end my own suffering.

Gedeon wildly shook his head, not wanting to look back on his years as a human. He couldn’t handle looking into his past. The things he did, the decisions he made… the memories were unbearable.

Darius made the mistake of never questioning Gedeon about his past. Perhaps because Darius didn’t want to relive his own. Whatever Darius’ reasoning behind not asking, he never learned of the horrible acts Gedeon committed.

Therefore, Darius had no idea what horrible acts Gedeon was capable of committing again.

I can crush this phone right now and pretend it never existed,he thought.

Could he actually risk eternal damnation to save his friends… his family?

Maybe I can.Maybe, if he crushed the phone, Artem wouldn’t have to find out he was hiding something. Maybe Gedeon could get away with it.

“Was that gift from Karina able to show you the way?” Artem’s sinister voice came from somewhere behind Gedeon, shocking him to the core. He thought he was alone in his room. He thought he was safe.

No one was ever safe here, were they?

Gedeon slowly turned until he was looking at the pale-faced master. Artem smirked. “Did you believe I was unaware of Karina’s need to be so modern? I caught on. We watched her constantly sneaking off to the nearest village, picking up their culture. Of course, I assumed she was too weak minded to do much more than that. I never suspected she would betray me.” He took a step closer to Gedeon. “Even the best of us make mistakes sometimes, don’t we?” Artem clasped his arms behind his back as he began pacing around the bedroom. “Now the question is, am I mistaken to place my trust in you?”

Gedeon didn’t have an answer because he didn’t know himself.

Noting Gedeon’s pause, Artem walked toward Gedeon with an outstretched hand. “Give me the phone.”
