Psycho: You better answer me.

Psycho: SCARLETT!

I stare at the continuous string of text messages from Emma. If voices didn’t murmur from the hallway, I’d consider calling her. Right now, I need to awkwardly face the men I’m to marry after last night. It’s not how I wanted to start my day, but I need to get it over with. I need to prove that I’m not some immature omega. I’m more than that.

My phone buzzes again, and I lean back, peeking at it resting on my knee. The etiquette teacher at Omega Prep would lose her shit if she saw me now. Phones are considered distractions and rude, especially during a time I should focus my sole attention on my alphas. I should be staring at the doorway waiting for their arrival like a good little girl.

Psycho: Respond to me and let me know you’re okay.

Psycho: What the fuck is going on? I’m tracking you now.

Psycho: Don’t make me fucking drive there. It’s six goddamn hours.

Emma doesn’t even give me a chance, her slight paranoia endearing. If something ever happened to me, I could count on her to rescue my ass.

“Looks like you should respond before Psycho comes crashing through a window on an unnecessary rescue mission,” Leo says, resting his hands on my shoulders.

I jump in my seat, nearly dropping my phone. “I’m sorry. I know this is poor etiquette, but it’s my best friend. I told her about what happened last night and then fell asleep when she didn’t respond.”

“Etiquette? This is our home, not a prep school. You don’t need permission to answer your friend. It’s fine.” Leo sits beside me, grabbing the pitcher of orange juice to pour us both a glass. “I assume her nickname precedes her?”

“You have no idea.” I accept the glass of juice and set it in front of me. “She’s...a bit outrageous. Unpredictable. But she’s also protective and caring.”

Psycho: SCARLETT!

Psycho: YOU.

Psycho: BETTER.

Psycho: BE.

Psycho: DEAD.

Psycho: Or have a cock in your mouth.

I sigh and set my phone on the table. Smirking, I stab my fork into a sausage link on my full plate and then open my camera app. Leo laughs as I snap a picture of me with the piece of sausage between my teeth and quickly send it to Emma.

Me: Not a cock but a sausage. Sorry. I’ve had a long night. I’ll call you later, okay?

Psycho: Fine, but don’t forget. You don’t want to find out what happens if you do.

Me: Love you, psycho.

Psycho: I know. :P

A tap sounds at the wide entrance of the dining room, drawing my attention away from my message with Emma. My heart races at the scent of sweet jasmine and tangy bergamot tickling my nose. Footsteps thud closer, and the chair on my other side slides from the table before someone fills it.

“Good morning, Scarlett,” Professor Ezra says, his smooth voice soft and gentle. “I hope you slept well. Is the food to your liking? I can make you something else if you prefer.”

“That’s not necessary. Everything tastes delicious. As for me, I’m just a bit tired. I hope you slept well, Professor Ezra.” The formality of my voice makes me cringe, and I turn my gaze and look at the man I might’ve once fantasized about last semester. His dark hair curls around his ears, the mop of strands as carefree as he always seemed to be.

His thick brows lower over his sparkling brown eyes. Running a hand through his black beard, he rubs his lips together. The V of his T-shirt displays his masculine, hairy chest, and I can imagine what he looks like without his shirt because of how tight it hugs his torso, the curves of his abs obvious. These alphas seem to take good care of themselves physically. I would never guess any of them were forty. Unlike Adrian and Professor Hart, Ezra doesn’t have any peppering of gray.

“Please, Scarlett. Call me Ezra.” Ezra slides his hand a bit closer to mine, but he doesn’t try to touch me.

“It’ll take me a bit of time to get used to it, considering I was a student in your class last spring.” I dart my gaze away, saving myself from his expression.

“Scarlett Carlisle. Yes, I do remember you hiding in the back of the lecture hall. I didn’t suspect you were an omega but just from the Pack Carlisle. You scored excellent on the final exam, messing up the grading curve for everyone.” He smirks with his words.
