“What’s wrong with him?” Fucking Hell. Hurt laces her words, and her soul dims just a little. She doesn’t have to say anything for me to know she expected Kase to give her more than a cold shoulder and attitude, especially after the fight we had over sharing her on every level.

It’s torture that I have to be a complete dick too. If I’m not, I’ll pull her into my arms and tell her how fucking awesome her crazy ass is, even though Kase made it sound like a bad thing.

And now I’m jealous as fuck that he left. He fucked her. He should be the one dealing with the strange tangle of emotions she unintentionally lassos me with.

“Dante? What happened? What did Lucian do? How long have I been out?” Stepping from my room, she closes the space and reaches out, stroking her fingers over my wing like she needs assurance that Lucian failed to cut it off. “Are you okay? I was so scared.”

I close my eyes and sigh. “The only thing you should be afraid of is what’s going to happen if you can’t get your shit together and help us get the job done. The only thing Lucian did was remind us that this shit isn’t about you, and you need to get your act together or let someone who is capable handle it.”

I truly am the devil. Her expression says as much as a flash of darkness crosses her face. I steel myself for her wrath, her mood already playing on Kase’s and how he just left her without so much as a second glance after their fuck fest.

“Getmyact together? This is unbelievable. You were gone for days, Dante!” she says, raising her voice.

I growl and snatch her off her feet, spinning her toward the wall. “I was trying to get the job done when all you’ve been doing is trying to fucking figure out if Micah can save your soul or if you’d be better off to just do what you’re supposed to.”

“What?” She glowers at me, wiggling in an attempt to break free. “What has gotten into you? I thought we were okay.”

I flash my fangs. “Nothing is fucking okay, Raven.”

“Dante—”

I press my hand over her mouth. “Stop. I’m not finished. You need—”

Pain explodes in my back, and I stare at Raven’s wide blue-green gaze. Fire reflects over the glassy surface as the demon shoves a blade deeper into my skin. I can’t believe the fucker was brave enough to walk right in, and now I know for certain Lucian wants to test us before the week is over.

Shoving her hands to my chest, Raven tries to push away to make a run for it. I should fight. I could do it. I could kill this fucker with my eyes closed. But I realize this must be done. Raven won’t push to succeed otherwise, not with thinking that she’s our soul regardless.

So I drop to me knees.

I let the demon take her.

He steals away the one woman who feels like the sun I want nothing more than to orbit around for the rest of time.

I’m left alone in my suffocating darkness.

Chapter 17

Her Personal Demons

RAVEN

“MICAH, HELP!” THE words screech from my mouth, my mind and body feeling torn apart. He shouldn’t be the one I yell for, but I can’t help myself. It’s like my soul knows deep down that he’s the being best for me and the only one who doesn’t want to possess my soul.

The demonic man adjusts me in his arms until he can slap his hot hand over my mouth. I had expected a disgusting, monstrous creature to be the thing dragging me away, but he looks mostly human apart from his pure black eyes and a glowing-red scar on his cheek. He leers at me and glides his black tongue over his lips. Shit. He knows I find him attractive. Double shit that it distracted me from fighting. What the hell is wrong with me? It’s like as long as my attacker is hot, a part of me isn’t as scared as I should be. I had no idea I was this vain. Maybe it’s the claim Hell has on my soul. Maybe it’s my obvious poor judgement in men. Whatever it is, my damn body relaxes and I even find myself smiling back.

“Look at you, my perfect little slut. You like my skin-bag look. I bet you’d suck my damn cock if I pulled it out. Wouldn’t you?” The demon flashes a smile. “You’d swallow every last drop of my demon jizz like the cum guzzler you are. I can’t wait to invite my contracts over and reward them with a good time with you. You look like a dirty girl who enjoys that, so I’ll have to tell them to be rough if they want to hear you scream.”

Oh. Fucking. No.

His comment triggers a shit-ton of fear inside me, and I finally snap out of my haze, seeing the man for the disgusting evil demon he truly is. His human façade falters, showing the beast lingering under his skin. His rotting body looks like it barely holds onto this realm, and green liquid oozes from clusters of holes that make my skin crawl.

Swinging my fist, I clock him in the cheek, regretting it immediately. The green ooze shoots from his pus clusters and burns across my skin. I screech and throw myself back, forcing the demon to release me. The world blurs with my fall, and I clench, expecting my ass to hit the ground.

Light blasts across my vision, turning the complex white, and the demon shrieks at a pitch intended for animals. I slam my hands over my ears, trying to muffle the noise. As quickly as it pierced my eardrums, it vanishes. My mind and body finally catch up to sync together, and I blink until I realize I’m in Micah’s cool arms.

“This is why I didn’t want to bring you back here,” Micah says, anger lacing his words. “I’ve been watching over the apartment and felt Hell open. Lucifer—”

“I already know he was here, Micah,” I snap, cutting him off. “He ruined my entire day and put Kase and Dante into bad moods. The demon interrupted an argument.”
