She wags her finger at him. “Like I said, maybe you can take what you want.”
Fucking damn. I can’t stand the thought, so I scoop Raven up and flap my wings, propelling us toward the door. I don’t wait for anybody to respond and race out of the apartment, launching into the sky the second I get a clear path out of the trees from our new home. We keep moving around to prevent the angels from keeping tabs on us.
Raven shifts in my arms and tightens her thighs around my waist, leaning in and kissing me with tongue. I hum under my breath and savor the taste of her mouth. She knows how to get to me in a way that leaves my whole body aching for her. She’s lucky that I don’t try to fuck her while flying. If I didn’t have to be on high alert, I would. I’d fuck her so hard that she would think that the stars were falling from the sky.
It takes everything in me to let her ease away from my mouth. She combs her fingers through my hair and rests them on the back of my head, cradling me with her palms. “Your envy is showing,” she teases, nuzzling her nose to mine and kissing me again.
“I can’t help it that you drive me wild. It’s been days, and I can still smell Lucian on you.” I adjust her in my arms, pulling her in closer to keep her warm from the icy air blowing around us. “This wasn’t the welcome back from Hell I had planned to give you.”
“I don’t care about having a special welcome home. All I care about is spending time with you, figuring out where Elias is, and now fucking breaking every damn angel we come across.” Her beautiful blue-green eyes dim with her thoughts.
“At least this now confirms that Elias isn’t in Heaven. For a second, we were a little bit worried.” I regret my words immediately. From the look Raven gives me, I realize that she didn’t even consider the possibility that instead of reincarnating as a human again, that he could’ve ended up elsewhere.
It’s something that the other devils and I have discussed on multiple occasions, especially when we realized Elias wasn’t in Hell.
“What?” Raven asks, her voice rising in pitch. “You have to be shitting me. That wouldn’t have happened, right?”
“Like I said, we don’t have to worry about it now. It would’ve been a longshot.” I turn my attention away from Raven and to the world around us. “That’s why we need to find an angel and see if we can either seduce it or beat it out of him. If we find Zade, I know which one to expect. He’s going to jump from grace any fucking day now.”
Why and how he hasn’t done so already? I have no fucking idea. He is sloth. He doesn’t do shit, except stalk us and look at us with desire but without the bravery to actually make a move.
Huffing a breath through her nose, Raven says, “I’m starting to think I’ll have better luck with getting Cassius to jump before Zade. And I kind of hate the thought. All I want to do is dick chop that stupid prideful angel.”
“Hey, at least you can still have some fun with it. I could have it dipped in gold or glass or some shit.” I grin with my words.
Raven giggles and shakes her head. “You are so fucking kinky and freaky. I love it.”
“We still have a lot to—” A flash of heavenly light steals my attention as a blasted angel materializes from a portal and into the Mortal Realm.
Fuck. Raven is my lucky charm. This bastard doesn’t even see me until it’s too late. Moving Raven to my hip, I unsheathe a throwing knife from my jacket and chuck it at the angel, sinking it into his wing.
The angel hollers and thrusts heavenly power in our direction, but I spin and fold my wings around Raven protectively, keeping her safe.
I freefall beside the angel and throw another knife, sinking it into his other wing. Raven squeaks with a sudden drop but manages to keep herself from screaming by sinking her teeth into my shoulder.
I touch down on the street first, landing in a crouch. The angel plummets into the branches of a tree and crashes to the ground. He smacks his back on the concrete, yelling out. Before he can get up, I rush him and summon a circle of hellfire around him, trapping him.
“Release me before all of Heaven’s army comes to destroy you and this abomination of a soul.” The angel presses his palms to the ground and pushes himself up.
Fury explodes through me, and I spit venom at the fucker, searing his chest through his shirt. I set Raven on her feet and link my hand with hers, keeping her close but also ensuring that we can both fight. I don’t know if more guardians will soon follow this dickhole.
“The only place I will release you is into one of the pits in the bowels of Hell.” I flash my fangs, unleashing my monster appearance.
The guardian widens his eyes like he’s never seen a devil before. And maybe he hasn’t. I don’t know who the fuck this guy is. And if I don’t know who he is, it just means he’s one of Heaven's good little soldiers and completely expendable. He’s probably one of the souls that actually made it into Heaven his first lifecycle before shit got real in the Mortal Realm.
“You won’t be able to keep me there. Things are changing, and it’ll be you who begs for the Higher Power’s mercy.” This fuckhead. He’s a cocky, self-assured son-of-a-bastard, isn’t he?
“Changing? How so?” I ask, raising an eyebrow.
“I will not betray Heaven.” The angel ruffles his feathers and continues to glower.
“Dante, make him tell us. He will give in. Or let me,” Raven says, squeezing my hand tighter. She straightens her shoulders and doesn’t back down, even though the angel tries to threaten her with his heavenly light.
I could never deny her, so I march forward through the barrier and grab the angel by the front of his shirt and lift him off his feet. I growl in his face, baring my fangs at him. He tries to act like a tough son-of-a-bastard and doesn’t close his eyes. Big mistake for him. I spit a stream of venom into his face, purposefully missing his eyes.
He howls in agony, whipping his body back and forth, but unable to break free from my death grip.
“Tell us how you think things are changing, or I will take your eyes next time.” I hiss under my breath, and Raven shifts behind me.
