“I told you that I am not uncomfortable with you, Raven,” Cassius murmurs, only stopping for a second to whisper the words. He caresses his lips to mine again like he can’t resist kissing me like this forever. It’s obvious he’s not only kissing me to touch my soul. He’d never admit it, though.

“This doesn’t prove much. All it does is show me that you’re not afraid of a little tongue.” I flick my tongue across his lips and nip his bottom lip between my teeth, stretching it.

He moans deep in his throat, the sexy sound vibrating over me. “You really want that orgasm, don’t you?” A smile crosses his lips, and he moves his hand lower until it cups my ass. He’s growing more bold by the second.

“I don’t think you even know how to accomplish that, so no. I’m not in the mood to teach you. Show me what you meant about making me feel content without physical intimacy. Right now, I think you’re all talk. I think you just wanted to kiss me and touch my soul under the ruse that you’d be helping me. You like it, don’t you? I bet if I’d let you, you’d soul fuck me.” It’s my turn to smile because I’m totally right, and we both know it. Angels have a different set of desires than humans. They love feeling pure souls as much as the devils.

I ease back even more and put about six inches of space between us. Cassius frowns as if the space hurts him, but he doesn’t close it. He continues to look at me as if I’m all he’s capable of seeing. And maybe I am in this pure white world just as he is all I can see. But I think it’s different for him. I can see him as he is an angel. With the way heavenly light illuminates from him, I think he sees me as a soul without my physical form. We are not on the same plane as we were. This is the spiritual realm, and it feels like the same place that Lucian has brought me several times.

“Raven, it’s more than about what I like and dislike about you. Of course, I enjoy being in the light of your soul. It is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, especially now that you carry a new being created from the purest light in the universe.” Cassius brushes his fingers along my cheek, pushing my black hair from my face. Drawing his fingers down my clavicle, he traces around the curve of my boob and to my torso until he plants his palm on my stomach.

As if his touch triggers me, a blinding light explodes through the air, quickly followed by absolute darkness. But the darkness doesn’t devour the light. It twines and blends, creating a glittering shade of gray haze.

“Blasphemy,” Cassius whispers, his wings spreading out wide. “This can’t be. You cannot create something made of light and dark.” I don’t know if his words are intended for me or if he’s thinking out loud, but either way, his comment pisses me off.

Anger bursts through me, and I slap his hand away from my stomach. The sudden change in his demeanor upon seeing the beautiful darkness created from my love for the devils causes me to build a steely guard around my soul to protect me from him. I cut him off but can’t figure out how to pull myself from this spiritual realm.

“Why the fuck do you think that? Obviously, anything is possible. I’m intended for Purgatory, so of course I can create two beings that encompass such a beautiful balance together. This is why you’re going to fail, Cassius. This is why it was pointless for you to bring me here. You think that I somehow carry a new light to serve Heaven, but you’re wrong. We don’t serve anyone but humanity. Now, release my soul. I don’t want to be here with you anymore. I knew you would fail to do as you said and just take advantage of me.” I shuffle a couple of steps back and fold my arms over my chest protectively. I try to will the world to return me back to the apartment, but nothing happens.

“You’re wrong. You belong to Heaven. Purgatory is a devil’s fantasy to sway power from where it belongs.” Cassius summons divine light between his palms. “I’ll show you. Enough light can help. Devils were once angels. Maybe this is why I was put in your path. Maybe—”

Pure, inky darkness swells around me, growing and moving as if the shadows come to life. Cassius’s eyes widen. For the first time in a while, I know he fears me. Well, not me. He fears the darkness swirling around me, taking over the spiritual realm he has me in.

“No, this can’t be happening.” Cassius summons more heavenly light in his palms, trying to use it against the darkness. “You have to stop, Raven. Please, something is extremely wrong. Make it stop.”

I narrow my eyes, wishing he’d stop. “Why? So you can continue to plot against us? So you can drag me to the guardians? So you can try to end this beautiful being born from love and justice? From balance?”

“I don’t want to end it. I want to fix it. I want to help you, so the darkness doesn’t consume your light. Look at everything around us, Raven. It needs to be controlled. Can’t you see? What if it manages to consume all of Heaven’s light? Then what?” Cassius tenses, his muscles rippling with his nerves. The more the darkness emanates from me, the dimmer his light shines.

It’s enough to tighten my chest with fear. What if he’s right? I don’t want to destroy Heaven. I don’t want the goodness of the world just to vanish. So what he says now? I can’t believe it. Nothing about the strange darkness feels bad. It feels powerful and perfect. It feels like love.

“You need to have faith. Nothing about this feels wrong, Cassius. Let me show you. Do you know how you opened my soul? Let me touch your being.” I summon the courage to step forward.

Cassius takes an automatic step back, his fear scrunching his features. “Raven, please.”

“Cassius, you have to trust me. I don’t want to destroy your light. I think my body is just reacting to your threat. So let me touch your being. You can cling on to the light of my soul if you want to.” I take another couple of steps forward, expecting him to disappear or something. I expect him to cower in fear. Or maybe try to fight me.

Instead, Cassius straightens his back and sharpens his features. He holds out his hands to me, his demeanor guarded, but he reluctantly gives in to my pleas.

I fucking hope this works, because I need him. Hell needs him.

“Just don’t resist. Don’t try to fight back with your light either.” I gently rest my hands in his and pull him close enough to wrap my arms around his neck. His eyes glow with heavenly light, and I catch my strange reflection. I’m a blur of light and dark and gray and everything in between. I’m only soul and spirit as whatever grows inside me overpowers my very essence.

“Raven,” Cassius says.

But I cut him off by pressing my mouth to his, and I kiss him just like we kissed before, except this time, instead of letting him touch my light, I touch his. I bask in the glory of his pure angelic being until we merge as one.

The world turns dark.

Cool fingers caress my forehead, drawing me from the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. It’s hard to explain what I had experienced with Cassius, but I know that he felt what I felt with the two vastly different beings growing inside me. My babies, however they come, will be incredible. Because even though they’re so incredibly tiny, they already have an impact on everyone who comes across me.

“The army is ready. We can band together in this relocation. A proper home has been found off the coast, and it will be easier to shield an island. We not only can keep the devils away, but we can also make sure that only trusted mortals will be within reach of Raven.” The unfamiliar voice triggers panic through me, and I jerk upright.

“Hey, Raven. Don’t attack. You are safe.” Cassius’s voice draws my attention away from the deep wrath of an angelic guardian. “We are just trying to work out the logistics. Mikail thinks it’s better to relocate you and keep you isolated, but I know that would be far too stressful and difficult.”

I can’t tell if Cassius is doing it because he knows I will destroy every fucking bastard angel that tries to touch me, or maybe he knows the dangers of provoking the one soul the devils love, but regardless, I’m thankful he doesn’t tell me to suck it up then to comply.
