I slouch my shoulders, not wanting her to take any heat from Alexander on my behalf. “I—”

A figure materializes behind Mya, startling the comment from my mouth. I take an automatic step back, my fear triggering Mya to turn around. Her body relaxes at the sight of the vampire, and she tosses her pretty ginger hair over her shoulder.

“Oh, hey! I didn’t know you’d be here, Govan,” Mya says, her voice turning sweeter. She boldly reaches out and caresses his arm with her fingers.

“I saw you leaving the gym. Had to fight off a dozen assholes who were trying to follow you.” The vampire, who I recognize from the Bella Crew, smiles with his teasing words. Usually, a line like that wouldn’t be serious, but it might actually be true. Vampires love a chase, and we were running. “Did Alexander loosen your chain a bit? Please tell me yes.”

Tipping her head back, Mya giggles. She reaches for his hand and swings it back and forth. “Only if you tell me you have a friend with you. This is our first night off in over a year, and I’m not the only one in need of entertainment.”

My heart skips, my muscles tensing. She’s talking about me. Shaking my head, I say, “I’m good. I don’t need you to call a friend or whatever.”

Govan doesn’t turn his attention to me, practically ignoring my existence. His eyes flick behind me, and I sense someone staring at my back.

“She’s right about that. I’ve got my girl covered.” Cool arms drape over my shoulders from behind as Sawyer’s familiar scent washes over me. His vanilla-citrus fragrance helps relax my nerves, and I can’t stop the excitement washing through me as I remember how he brought me food after the last show.

I tip my head back and look up at his tall frame. He smiles down at me, showing off his fangs, and something strange washes through me. It’s hard to explain, but it’s like my attraction is twice as much as yesterday. I shouldn’t even be feeling this way, especially after giving Knox a blow job. The last thing I need is to find myself in the middle of a feud.

“Your girl, huh?” I ask, teasing him with a smile. “Don’t let anyone hear you. Master Aris would punch your dick or something.” The ‘or something’ meaning that he’d probably take out his anger on me. I regret saying the comment, because instead of taking it lightheartedly, Sawyer’s blue eyes darken and he scowls.

“He’d regret trying,” he mutters, tightening his arms around me.

Mya’s brows scrunch together, and she shifts awkwardly on her feet. This went from playful to dark real fast. Forcing herself to laugh, she draws my attention away from Sawyer. “Relax, Ruby. You heard Opal. Alexander isn’t here. Let’s just have some fun. These guys are tough. Isn’t that right, Govan?” She flutters her lashes at the vampire and winks.

“Damn straight.” Swinging his arms, he surprises her by picking her up and tossing her on his shoulder. “Now come on. I want to get you wet.”

Her laughter at his innuendo echoes through the quiet pool house until a splash cuts off her voice. It’s now that I realize the place is empty. There are usually at least a dozen vampires with donors hanging around, but I don’t even see the pool staff.

Sawyer moves and stands in front of me, blocking my view of the rows of empty lounge chairs. He reaches out and touches my cheek. “I hope it’s okay if I’m here. I wanted to apologize for last night after the show. I didn’t mean to piss Aris off. I heard what your friend said, Hayley.”

Goosebumps prickle over my skin. He knows my real name. How the fuck does he know my real name? I’ve never told him.

“I want you to know that you don’t have to worry about him either,” he adds. His blue eyes capture mine, drawing me in.

Something strange blossoms through me the longer I stare into his blue depths, and I feel as if he’s looked at me like this before. My muscles slacken, and a small blip of panic ignites inside me. He’s getting into my head. Fuck. What the fuck?

Leaning closer, he whispers, “Remember for me.”

Like a bunch of missing pieces click into place, I blink as memories flood back to me. The blur of a night surrounding Quartz’s death clears, and I gasp and clutch Sawyer’s cheeks, sharing his breathing space. My heart beats erratically—my mind and body trying to catch up with each other. He saved me. Knox and Monroe too. I asked them to wipe my mind, so Alexander couldn’t get into my head, but it looks like he made it so that he could bring the memory back.

“Sawyer,” I whisper, pressing my fingers harder into his skin.

“I didn’t want you to lose everything from last night, so I only put a block in place that I can remove...though I erased all the terror you felt. You shouldn’t have to live with that.” His hand travels over my side and to my lower back, pulling me flush against him. “You’re my girl. I already struggle not to steal you away.”

I lick my lips, his admission of his possessiveness sending a wave of mixed emotions through me. I know I should correct him, because he doesn’t own me and never will. Alexander would ensure it. Another part of me wishes that he did own me. I wouldn’t mind it. He’s shown me what it’s like to be under his protection. It’s addicting almost, knowing what he and the Bella Crew would do on my behalf. I want them to destroy every asshole for me.

But would they really?

I don’t even know. We’ve only met a short time ago.

“I wish.” Something intense comes over me, and I stretch up and close the space completely, brushing my lips to his.

He reacts with a moan, sliding his hand lower until he grabs my ass, sending tingles through my body. I part my lips open, inviting him to glide his tongue into my mouth, and he kisses me deeper. I comb my fingers into his hair, loving how soft his strands are. Kissing him is like kissing someone who wants to give me more than they take, because his sensuous kiss is more passionate than demanding, and so full of desire that I feel his cock hardening against my pelvis.

I automatically reach between us and stroke my hand over his shaft, feeling the thickness of his girth. He’s bigger than Knox, thicker too, and I shouldn’t have expected anything less considering how tall and broad and buff he is.

He moans softly, taking my hand and lacing his fingers through mine. “Hayley, you don’t have to do that.”

I ease away, frowning in confusion. No one ever stops my wandering hands, and I want him to feel as good as he makes me feel. “But you like it.”
