Alexander clicks off the feed and materializes in front of me. I cower in fear, staring at the dagger glittering in his hand. He points it at me, baring his fangs. He doesn’t believe me. He’s going to end my life right now to protect his business.

Snatching me by my short, choppy hair, Alexander twists the ruined strands around his fist and pulls me from the floor. I screech in pain, unable to silence my mouth, and he holds the dagger to my throat.

“I want you to listen to me very carefully, Hayley. You belong to me and only me. The only reason you aren’t dead is because I don’t want to get in another fight with Opal, nor do I want to waste an investment I’ve been growing and nurturing into someone invaluable for twenty-six years. But you need to prove to me that you’re worth all the trouble. I want answers. You will find them for me.” Alexander traces my throat with the blade but doesn’t cut me. “I’ll give you a week to give me something, anything, to work with in keeping the lowlifes in control. You will find out what exactly the Bella Crew plans, because I know they’re not here for wealth and power.”

“I—I don’t understand,” I say, struggling to find my footing with my throbbing ankle. “You want me to get you information? How?”

“Figure it out. I’ll be fucking watching, and they’re smart, so don’t fuck it up. They’ll know if I let your leash loose. You must do it as if I don’t know. If you don’t get me what I want, I promise you, baby doll. You’ll wish you were dead. You’ll beg for it. If you think your stay at The Pala was bad, wait until I rent you out to every hotel on the Strip.”

I don’t know how to respond or even if I should.

He doesn’t wait.

Opening the office door, he lets it bang against the wall and disappears. I fall to my side and curl in on myself, my whole body twisting in agony.

“Fuck, Hayley,” Sawyer says, releasing a growl.

He roars and punches the wall.

But I can’t do anything. I can’t find my voice. All I can do is sob.
