He chuckles and shakes his head. “Now you’re tempting me, but really, Hayley. It needs to be your choice. It’s what me, Knox, and Monroe agreed on.”

I blow out a breath. “So ask me.” Clutching his face, I lean in and capture his eyes like I can force him to prod into my head.

He reacts, locking his gaze to mine. My body relaxes as he opens my mind, connecting with me on a level that might be as intimate as sex. I don’t feel like he’s controlling me, but I do feel more open and less guarded.

“Hayley, I want you to speak freely, okay?” he asks, his eyes now steel-colored with his power.

“Okay,” I respond, my mouth and brain feel a bit of a disconnection as the answer automatically comes from me.

Leaning closer, he ensures to fill my world with him and only him. “I need you to make a decision. Tell me, do you want to stay or do you want to go with us?”

I lick my lips, my stomach fluttering. “I want—”

The door to the suite flies open, jerking Sawyer’s gaze from mine, cutting off the pull of his mind manipulation to get answers from me. He growls and hops up, clutching me in his arms. I whip around and catch sight of Garnet in the doorway.

“Hayley,” she says, tears streaking down her made up face. “Help me.”

I frown. “What’s wrong?”

Garnet waves her hand, drawing my gaze to a knife. “Hayley, please. Help me.”

My eyes widen. “I don’t under—”

My words turn into a scream as Garnet jerks the knife across her throat, sending blood spilling down her pure-white costume. She drops to her knees and falls flat on her stomach.

“Hayley?” another voice says from the hallway. Mya steps into the doorway, not even reacting to Garnet bleeding on the floor.

I spot the knife in her hand.

“Hayley, please,” she says, her voice monotonous.

“No!” I shout. “Mya, no!”
