“We’ve decided that you’ve outgrown your role as one of the gems. You will now take the Strip by storm. As long as you agree, Alexander doesn’t feel the need to slaughter anyone. He is willing to make an arrangement.” Opal licks her lips and swallows. A frown breaks her expression, and I realize I’m not going to like what she says. “We’ve decided that the best way to get back into a good business place is to hold an auction and rent you out as a performer across the strip. Everyone will be included to ensure all vampires are able to participate and hopefully ease the tension. We don’t want a war.”

My head whirls with her words. An auction? They want to put me up for auction like I’m a damn piece of property? Fuck.

“No,” Sawyer mutters, his growl whipping me in the chest.

“If you don’t, we’ll have to figure out new means of power and wealth. Do you know what that will mean for my gems?” Opal asks, her lips trembling. “I don’t think they’ll survive that, but I know you can.”

But can I? I don’t think I can.

“Agree, Hayley. It’s the only way anyone is leaving here alive. If you don’t, Opal will also have to find herself some new performers, because these ones have already been ruined by the circumstances. Make your decision. You have five seconds.” Alexander squeezes Sawyer’s heart again. “Four. Three.”

“Wait, okay. If this is what it takes, then I’ll do it. But I need a minute with them. Please, they won’t leave me so easily. Just let me talk to them.” I wring my hands together and risk stepping closer to Sawyer.

Alexander relents and slowly slides his hand free, leaving Sawyer’s heart intact. I gasp and rush to him, ignoring the growls echoing around me. I hug him and press my face to his neck, praying with everything in me that he sees reason. That he realizes there is no way I’m giving up, but I also can’t let him do this.

“Take the deal. Don’t fight here. Please. I can’t be the reason you die.” I breathe against his ear. “Please.” Tilting my head back, I look at Knox and Monroe. “I want to stay. Just let me stay.”

“I hate this, Hayley. It goes against every one of my instincts to leave you with these monsters,” Sawyer whispers in my ear. “We will figure this out. There is no way I’m letting any other fucking hotel get their hands on our girl.”

I crash my mouth to his, only to have two strong hands yank me away. The world blurs as Opal races away with me.

The last thing I see is the Bella Crew disappearing from the casino. The elevator door slides shut, cutting me off from the world again.

Fuck. This is the end for me. I know it.

If Sawyer, Knox, and Monroe can’t buy me at auction, my life is over.
