“I’ll give you a hotel if you show me your ways, Lawrence. I’ll give you a fucking position on the La Vega leadership. Is that what you want?” Alexander growls and whips his body back-and-forth still trying to get me off of him.

“Like I said, I’m going to need you—” Lawrence hollers and spins around, jerking his body as loud pops ring through the air.

Monroe and Sawyer shoot their guns, the spray of bullets hitting everything in their paths. I shrink down behind Alexander, using him as a shield. He jerks as a couple of bullets penetrate his body, and I yelp as one splits through him and into me.

It’s enough to make Monroe hesitate.

“Stand down,” Lawrence shouts, holding his palms up. “I have it under control.”

“This is a fucking trap!” Cooper shouts, rattling his chains in an attempt to break free.

Sawyer and Monroe glance at him, their bodies turning rigid.

“We know. We got word that this fucker wasn’t in trouble.” Sawyer unsheathes a long sword from a holster on his back, and he snarls, extending his fangs. “We have the fucking hotel surrounded. You need to give Hayley to us, and we will forget about it.”

Alexander flies from the wall, heading right towards Sawyer. He prepares to fight the vampire, but he doesn’t get a chance. The lights flash off, and an alarm blares through the air.

A dozen figures blur through the shadows, and more gunfire and yells create a cacophonous melody in the gym.

“I will not allow you to ruin our city!” a feminine voice says, shouting over the alarm.

I accidentally release Alexander, my ears hurting too badly to ignore, and he snatches me from his back and throws me onto the floor in front of him. Stomping his boot down, he crushes my chest, and I cry in pain.

“Everyone drop your weapons or the leadership will have no choice but to execute you for treachery. We received word that you were planning something against us, Alexander. And now, this proves it.” The lights flash back on with the silence of the alarm shutting off. A woman click-clacks forward in stilettos with a scowl crossing her face.

“You know nothing!” Alexander yells, stepping over me to face the female vampire. “Which traitor is trying to break the leadership apart? I was only working alongside Lawrence to get my donor back. We were also getting the Bella Crew in control. They plan to destroy our city. Not me.”

The woman shifts on her heels and looks at the open door behind her. I stare in shock at Walcott and Govan standing in the doorway, crossing their arms over their chests.

“That’s not what I’ve heard. The Bella Crew came to us first. They told us everything you’ve been doing.” The woman rubs her lips together, a smug look crossing her face.

“Don’t be foolish, Narcisa. What I’m doing here is far greater. We’ll defeat the rebels and put new positions of power in the hotels. I can prove it.” Alexander fists his hands. “I was planning on executing the leaders of the Bella Crew now.”

Fear crashes through me, and I launch from the floor and at Alexander’s back. I realize the true trigger of my dhampir nature lies in my need to protect those I care about. I will not let Alexander even pretend he’s going to kill anyone.

I hiss and growl, the animalistic noises widening Narcisa’s eyes. It’s in this moment that I realize my mistake. I just revealed that I’m different to her.

“The donor! Did you transform her?” she accuses, unsheathing a dagger. “You know what kind of offense that is, Alexander.”

Alexander spins and shoves me away from him. I land in Lawrence’s outstretched arms, and he drops me to the ground but doesn’t release me. He tightens his hands around my wrists and dangles me in front of him. The pain is enough to freeze my body.

“You’re mistaken. She’s a dhampir.” Alexander whips his attention to me.

No. Fucking, oh no.

“She’s going to change everything. She’ll help us gain even more power. We can have more than La Vega, but you have to listen to me. You have to remember our alliance.” Alexander offers out his hand to the woman.

She doesn’t take it and instead places her hands on her hips. “And what of Lawrence? You know we can’t allow him in with his despicable ways.”

“Some ways are necessary,” Alexander says. “I will prove it. Call upon the leadership and the top coven heads.” Alexander straightens his bloody suit. “I have a presentation in store for you. If you will just hear me out, I think you’ll be quite impressed and will change your mind.”

The woman slowly nods her head. “If this turns into—”

“I’ll allow you to hold control over my hotel, Lawrence, Hayley, and the blasted Bella Crew until then to prove my loyalty.” Alexander rolls his shoulders. “Trust me.”

“This better be worth my time. If it’s not, you will face execution.” Without another word, the woman motions to her security team. They fly into the room and restrain everyone, not giving us a chance to speak or fight because they gag us.

The woman materializes in front of me and cocks her head to the side, staring deep into my eyes.
