Chapter one

Hayley

Knocked Up

“Ican’tproceed. She’salready pregnant. What do you want me to do? I can terminate and then we can proceed in a couple weeks.” The words muffle into my pounding head as the figure standing over me blurs in and out of my vision.

I lose consciousness again, the world darkening.

“No. Just leave her. I want to wait it out. The gestation period isn’t as long as it is with donors. I will not risk losing a possible dhampir just to have one created with my bloodline. I’m not that selfish. I can always have you try again later. The Bella Crew won’t be able to fight much longer. Their numbers might be large, but they still don’t have the power they need to seize control over La Vega. The leaders will get things under control. That I promise you.” Alexander’s words pull me from the darkness, setting my whole world ablaze around me. My vision turns red with my anger. I can barely comprehend what’s going on as I lie frozen and medicated on the bed.

I shouldn’t be so surprised.

I shouldn’t feel so violated, considering that worse things could’ve happened.

But a part of me breaks down. How could this have happened? The Bella was supposed to be safe. No one should’ve been able to get to me, yet Alexander still managed to infiltrate my home. So have renegade humans. Blood Rebels. I’ve heard of them before from Sawyer, because a line blurs between what the crews stand for and what the renegades do. It’s obvious that they’re more concerned about taking control instead of bringing balance.

And here I am, now in the middle because of who I am.

I killed someone. Those bastards were planning to rape me in an attempt to impregnate me. Alexander had the same idea but by more—still a fucked up manner—but I’m already...

No. I can’t be.

A cool finger touches my chin, turning my head. “Hello, my dear.”

My heart threatens to crash from my chest. I can’t let the shock of everything control me. I need to think. I need to fight. I’m not some fucking victim. I’m a survivor, and I will destroy this asshole for what he has put me through. I will send Alexander a message.

“She’s awake Mr. Aris. Should I sedate her again? We don’t know what kind of risks come with it. You should’ve told me there was a chance that she could’ve conceived prior to this.” The vampire leans in, his eyes flashing silver as he studies my face.

I open and close my mouth, my tongue heavy but my will demanding that I push words through my lips. “No.” It hurts to even breathe, the sedation heavy like a stone squishing my body.

“My infuriating baby girl. You know how happy I am, right? You’re giving me a child and an heir. Maybe I’ll keep you around a while longer. Perhaps this is what we needed to fix the bond that you’ve broken between us. Your child will be far more obedient than you are. I don’t have Opal’s influence anymore.” Alexander’s voice hums through the air, coming from the com device the other vampire holds.

Rage explodes through me, getting my body to fight against the sedation. I curl and uncurl my fingers, feeling as heat fills my icy veins. My body devours the vampire’s attempt to keep me still, and I wiggle my toes next.

“I’ll kill you. You are fucking dead,” I mutter, my breath heaving with my words. My teeth chatter and my stomach twists. I feel as if I’m going to be sick.

“Mr. Aris. Make your decision now. I must leave if I’m going to get out of here. The alarms will signal at any second. There will be another group of renegade donors entering the building. They’re supposed to distract the Bella Crew for the extraction of the dhampir, according to my source.” The vampire pulls a syringe from his jacket and flicks his finger against it. “Though, they’ll realize they’ve failed pretty quickly.”

“If you think there is some risk to her health, then no. Leave her. You were hard enough to find, and I don’t want the leadership knowing my plan. Word will travel fast with the traitors within the crews.” Alexander’s voice lowers with his words. The fucking bastard. What does he mean about traitors?

“I wish I could tell you with certainty, but I can’t. I just don’t have the answers. I’ve never seen anyone like her.” He bows over me and combs my hair from my face. “I might be able to get her out of here if you want.”

“I’m not ready. The Bella Crew will attack at full force when they find out. They’ll know it’s me. Just leave her. Make sure you manipulate her mind. She will need to accuse the renegade donors. It should be them who takes the heat. If we can put a wedge between the vampires and the donor population there, then we need to do it.” Alexander growls, his voice shooting fear to my chest. “Now hurry. I’ll meet you in the shadows under the arch.”

Shit. Shit. Shit. This can’t be happening. He can’t manipulate my mind. I won’t let him. I will break free of this sedation. It’s almost run its course through me. Sensation grows across my wrists.

The vampire clicks off his com device and pinches my chin. He turns my head back-and-forth, studying my face. His eyes turn completely silver as he drinks me in, trying to get me to look at him. I shift my stare away, looking up instead of at him. He tightens his grip and digs his nails into my skin. Still, I don’t relent. I need to buy a couple more seconds. My body awakens from the numbness. I’m regaining control.

“Hayley, look at me. I don’t want to hurt you. If you comply, we can just get this over with and I’ll be on my way. If you keep resisting, I will sedate you, even against Alexander’s wishes. I’m not going to die here because you’re too stubborn to be a good little dhampir. Alexander warned me about you. Please, make things easy.” Flashing his fangs, the vampire bares his teeth, getting closer to my face.

I ignore him and manage to shut my eyes, only to have him use his fingers to pry them open. He hisses and snaps his teeth, triggering my fear instincts. It’s what my body needed to get complete control. Jerking my head up, I smash my forehead into his chin hard enough to send his head cracking backwards. Pain swells over my skin and blood drips down my face. One look at him shows that I broke one of his fangs, and now it lodges into my forehead. It’s enough to set off my dhampir nature, his blood smelling delicious. Just one drink, and the pain will go away. I’ll be able to find my strength, and he won’t be able to manipulate my mind.

Jabbing his hand forward, he locks his fingers around my throat and squeezes so hard that the edges of my vision crowd with shadows. He’s not going to sedate me, but he will ensure that I pass out by cutting off my airway.

Oh no. This can’t be happening. If I black out again...

“Let her go!” Mya hollers at the same time she smashes a lamp against the vampire’s skull. He snarls and jerks upright, spinning to snatch Mya off her feet.
