Anger bubbles through me and I grab for the door handle, but Sawyer doesn’t let me leave.
“I’m not here to fight.” Narcisa raises her hands and surrender. “I’m here to ask for mercy. I’m aware of what is to come, and I request that you hear me out. I can help you.”
Help us? She wants to help us? Of course she fucking does. She knows that this is over. Her power is over.
“I don’t need your help,” I say, knowing that she can hear me through the glass and metal surrounding me.
“What if I give you Alexander?” Narcisa steps forward. “I know what he is planning. I can bring you him.”
“We want the entire leadership. I will consider sparing you if you prove to me that you are no longer interested in being one of them. And then I want access to all of La Vega.” Sawyer speaks up for me, his muscles rippling beneath my body.
Narcisa’s eyes flash silver. “I want a position of power still. I don’t care what it is, but I will not be a Strip dweller.”
Sawyer doesn’t respond right away, taking a moment to glance at the others.
“What if she turns against us?” Monroe asks.
“Give her The Whiskey. That’s what she can have.” Cooper keeps his voice even. “It’ll be enough, but she will have to follow our laws. She will have to take any of the vampires we no longer want in La Vega.”
Narcisa crinkles her nose. “That’s—”
“All we are offering. Accept it or die. Those are your only options.” I dig my fingernails into the palms of my hands. “You will know what it’s like to be a donor for once. Make your decision now.”
Narcisa straightens her shoulders and closes her eyes. “I accept.”
Now if only everything else could be this easy.
But the universe won’t show mercy on us. The universe wants to test our strength.
It wants us to put up one hell of a fight.
Chapter seventeen
Hayley
Downfall
Thiswilleitherbea miracle or a complete disaster. Narcisa could be setting us up, but a part of me knows that she’s a smart woman and strategic. I don’t think she will risk her life for the leadership or La Vega. She craves power. She craves an easy, malleable donor population. If she fights against us, she’ll get neither.
“Head right and stop at the utility door about a block down on the building to the left. That’s an access tunnel into the tower and can only be opened by one of the leaders.” Narcisa directs Monroe from the third row and beside Cicero. She sits as far from him as possible but doesn’t say anything about the fact that he doesn’t react, speak, or even move.
“Give me access to all security cams in the building.” Knox holds his com device out to Narcisa. “I want all codes and visuals to the tunnels running beneath the city.”
“I don’t have–”
Monroe growls, cutting her off. “Cut off her hand. We don’t need her if we have her prints.”
Narcisa hisses. “That won’t be necessary. One of you can hack into Reed’s account and act on his behalf. It’ll take two leaders to acquire that kind of information.”
“God damn it. Give me his coven’s identification code. That’s all I’m going to need. I already have access to his prints and shit.” Monroe shifts in the seat, driving with one hand. He pulls up to the curb and shuts off the engine, not even bothering to try to hide the vehicle as he parks in front of the access door.
Narcisa sighs and takes his com device, tapping at least twenty digits onto the screen. “You better ensure the leadership falls or else they will have my heart for this.”
“You should’ve considered that before. We could’ve handled this a lot more quickly had you not let your power get to your head. You knew what they were planning, yet all you did was try to manipulate us into an agreement. That’s not going to work anymore. We’ve discovered our girl has unbelievable power. Power enough to scare the entire vampire population.” Knox tightens his jaw, turning to face me.
Sawyer growls and backhands him across the shoulder. “Not scare them. Destroy them. Look at how compliant this fucker is. He should have minded himself with us instead of trying to push Hayley.”
