Grabbing my hand, Penelope drags me back toward the others. Silence falls around our group, and Chase, Evander, and Adam close in around me. Davian grabs his makeshift weapon, a branch he carved into a point, and stands tall, staring at the forest.

“Fuck, did they sound like they’re getting closer?” Evander mutters, keeping his voice low.

“Maybe they won’t bother us if we just keep quiet and wait it out.” Chase brushes his fingers against mine, and I automatically take his hand, my fear getting the best of me.

“We need to take shifts. Someone should be awake at all times. I think we need to all sleep together as well.” Tiffany wrings her fingers, her hands shaking.

I nod my head. “I agree.”

“Same,” a couple of the others say in unison.

Our fear steals the good mood between everyone, and it doesn’t seem like we will get it back tonight.

“Who wants to take the first shift with me? I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep at all.” Evander digs his heels into the sand.

I raise my hand at the same time that Davian, Chase, and Adam do. Offering a small smile, Evander extends his hand to me. I link my fingers through his while I still hold Chase’s hand. It should feel weirder than it does, but I just feel safe between them.

“Don’t take your eyes off the trees,” Alicia says, crossing her arms over her chest.

Creed drapes his arm over her shoulders. “We’re going to be fine. As long as we don’t go into their territory or bother them, they’ll leave us alone.”

It’s the best we can hope for.

This is going to be the longest night of my life.

I hope I survive it.

Chapter five

Eliana

Attack

RUN.

I jolt awake. The sharp, strangely familiar voice repeats the word in my mind. Sweat prickles over my body, and I realize that I have my palms pressed into Chase and Adam’s bare chests. I feel as if I just got to sleep because of how nervous I was. I ended up taking the guys’ offer to bunk together since Penelope and the women picked other teams to take watch. I can’t blame them for feeling safer with someone other than me.

“Eliana? What is it?” Adam grabs my hand, squeezing my fingers to get my attention.

Was I really sleeping on my stomach with an arm over each of them? I now rest on my knees, still pressing them down with my weight. If panic didn’t ignite inside me, making me gasp, I might fall flat to hide my boobs, hanging in the most unflattering way.

Run!

I don’t respond to Adam and scramble to my feet, the command too powerful to ignore. He doesn’t let go of my hand, getting up with me. I hit my head on the top of the shelter. It shakes under the force but thankfully doesn’t collapse.

“Everyone up. We have to go. It’s not safe.” I keep my voice low, practically hissing the words. It squeaks with my nerves, cracking under the dryness of my throat.

I nudge Chase with my foot, getting him to wake up. He’s a deep sleeper compared to Adam, unfazed by my commotion. But my kick? I get him hard enough in the hip that Chase snaps his eyes open and looks up at me. It’s just light enough to know dawn approaches. I realize that he gets the perfect view of my vagina, and I can’t stop the blush from crawling up my body. Sleep steals his professional doctor mentality away, and he gets a boner and licks his lips, wetting them.

“We have to go,” I whisper again. “Now.”

“What? Why?” He sits upright and peers around. Shoving his hand into Davian’s back, he shakes him awake. “Hey, man. Get up.”

Evander groans and rubs his face and his eyes, hearing us. “What’s going on?”

Adam motions to Tristan. “Get him up.”

Run.The voice steals my attention again, but I know it’s in my head because no one else reacts.
