“Kellan!” Eliana screeches, digging her nails into my shoulders. “Seriously? You’re stalking me?”

Rage burns through me at her comment. She knows him, but it doesn’t sound good. Stalking? Commanding she can’t be with me? What? I curl my hands into fists. I’ll kill him before he tries anything. Not only did this asshole cock-block me, but he also now tries to get within reach of Eliana.

I swing my arm, putting my whole body into the punch. Stumbling, I hit air. The bastard quickly dodges out of my way. He releases a deep, throaty noise—primal and possessive, almost like he is warning me.

I refuse to let him intimidate me. “Stay back and leave us alone. I mean it.”

“Eliana—”

I prepare to tackle him, he is ignoring me completely, not helping my annoyance. Locking her fingers around me, Eliana tugs me back. I automatically step back without resisting. I don’t know who the fuck this guy is, but Eliana cares enough about me to intervene.

Eliana rests her hands on my shoulders, pressing against my back. “Please, Chase. He’s dangerous. I don’t want you getting hurt.” Sliding around me, she moves close to my side, letting me sling my arm across her lower back to squeeze her hip. She points at the guy—Kellan—pursing her lips. “You need to listen to Chase and leave. I don’t want to talk to you unless you’re ready to give me answers. And try to tell me what and who I can do again and see what happens. That’s none of your damn business.”

It takes everything in me not to look her in the eyes. I can’t take my eyes away from the threat, but I want to study her expression and get a clearer idea of what or who I’m dealing with. She obviously knows him. But how?

And what does she mean about answers?

The guy continues ignoring me, locking his gaze on Eliana. “I told you—”

Anger crashes over me, and I charge forward. I plow into the guy, knocking him off his feet. Swinging my arm, I punch him in the face, catching him off guard this time. Except he doesn’t fight back, remaining calm. It pisses me off even more, and I take another swing at him.

“You know what’s going on here! You better tell us before I beat the shit out of you, you asshole!” I grab a fistful of his hair, tipping his head back.

Again, he doesn’t respond or react.

I jerk my arm, preparing to jab my fist into his nose, but Eliana locks her hand around my wrist, stopping me. She’s stronger than she looks. Yanking back, she knocks me off of the man. I scramble to my feet and prepare to fight against his counterattack. He doesn’t move from the ground. He just lays there, resting on his elbows.

“Chase, you need to calm down. He’s with them. He’s part of this, and I don’t want you to risk your life. We don’t know what they’re capable of.” Eliana wraps her arms around me from behind and tugs me back, adding more space between us and the bastard on the ground.

I release a heavy breath and shake out my bleeding fist. “We need to do what it takes to get answers.”

She steps around me and faces me, leaving her back exposed. I train my gaze on the guy instead of her. I just want to pick her up and keep her safe. I want to clobber that bastard until he tells us everything.

“Let me handle it. He helped me on the first day when the wolf attacked and I found the creek. He’s the one who gave me the backpack.” Eliana presses her palm against my chest. “He helped Adam and me the last time too. He made sure that the others with him didn’t find us.”

“He could be setting us up. You can’t trust him,” I argue, flicking my eyes from Eliana to the guy.

“I don’t trust him. But I don’t want you risking your life by trying to beat the answers out of him. So, please. Let me handle this.” Eliana runs her fingers up my chest and to my neck. Stretching up, she brushes her lips to mine, waiting for me to relax.

The guy burns me a glare, watching Eliana kiss me from his spot on the ground. His muscles ripple, and he digs his fingers into the sand. Watching her with me gets to him. He looks ready to jump up at any second now to finally fight me. I almost want him to. I kiss Eliana deeper, sliding my hand around her lower back to pull her even closer to test his resolve.

Something strange flashes in his eyes. It’s as if the sun reflects at me, but he sits in the shade. Something’s wrong with him. He’s part of this mess, and I know whatever he’s involved in might be the end of me.

“Please, Chase,” Eliana murmurs against my lips. “I need to handle this. He won’t hurt me. I know he won’t. But you? Just please.”

I have no right to deny her. I don’t even know why she asks me. I don’t control her. The fact that she does ask me awakens something inside me. My respect for her grows even more. My attraction does too.

Slowly, I nod my head. “Okay. I’ll let you handle this. But I want to know everything.”

“No secrets. Not anymore. We’re in this together.” She offers me a reassuring smile, though her eyes don’t light up with it.

“No secrets,” I repeat.

I turn my gaze away from Eliana to look at the asshole. My heart sinks into my stomach. He’s gone. The fucker got away, and I missed it.

Eliana sighs and takes my hand. “He’ll be back. I know he will be. Let’s just find somewhere to wait out the day until Adam comes for us.”

I let her guide me away from the tree line until we reach the waves. I never thought I’d be standing naked with a beautiful woman on a beach in a tropical paradise but here I am.
