My eyes widen. “We could steal it and get the fuck out of here.” Hope rises inside me, and that’s all I can think about now. If we had a boat, things would be so much easier. I wonder if that’s how my grandma had managed to escape. “Tristan, we have to go to them. If it’s unattended, we need to take it. Now. Together.”

Footsteps slap against the rocks, and I jerk my attention to Kellan as he rushes toward us. I can still feel his raging emotions, and fear explodes from him. He’s not afraid of anything outside of us. He’s afraid of what I’m thinking. Of what I want to do. Because he doesn’t want me to leave the island.

No, not the island. He doesn’t want me to leave him.

But I can’t stay. I can’t just accept this is my life now. I’m not a lykoswulf. I’m human. I was born in the human world, and I plan to live the rest of my life there. It’s the only thing I can imagine. Even after all of this, I still want to go to the place I’m familiar with. The place that used to have people that cared for me before my parents died. There is a reason I ended up there and that my grandmother left this place. I must follow her lead.

“Eliana, please. Don’t go yet.” Kellan picks up his pace and comes in to view, emerging from the shadows of the back of the cave. “What you’re planning won’t work.”

I glare at him. “You don’t know that.”

He raises his hands up in surrender, slowing down. “But I do. Please, just listen to me. If you go—”

I point my finger at him. “You can’t keep us here. We don’t belong.” Tightening my fingers around Tristan’s, I pull him closer, getting him to silently follow my lead.

Kellan growls and shifts into a wolf before our eyes. He stalks forward, his body rippling with his movements and his thick grey coat stands on end. He’s not going to let us leave. Well, he’s going to try.

I shift my eyes to Tristan. Leaning close, I whisper, “We have to try. We can’t let him stop us.”

Tristan bobs his head. “You know I’m with you. We’re going to get the fuck off this island. I won’t let anyone stop us.” Slowly reaching behind him, Tristan pulls something from the bag on his shoulder. It was one that Kellan gave us, but what he pulls out of it...shit. I had no idea anyone grabbed the net.

“Eliana, be smart about this. You don’t want them to come after you. It’s not my pack, and I can’t fight them off on your behalf.” Kellan’s voice projects through my mind, and he inches closer in his wolf form, looking ready to launch in our direction to pounce on me.

I wag my finger at him. “Stay back. You’re not in charge of us. You’re either beside me or in my way.” It pains me to say the words, but the truth to them sinks deeply inside me. I don’t need someone to tell me what’s best. I need someone who can tell me that I can achieve anything I want.

Kellan releases a growl, the threatening noise igniting my human fear instincts.

Tristan expands the net and chucks it at Kellan, managing to blanket it over him. Neither of us waits to see if it traps him. Tightening his fingers around mine, Tristan pulls me in the direction of the mouth of the cave.

I run hard on my bare feet.

Sunshine blinds me as we exit. Ignoring the cacophonous noise of the wolves in the forest, we run together toward the beach.

We break from the tree line and rush into the sand, kicking it up around us. And then I see them. Three men lead a couple of humans from a motorized raft.

Arms lock around me from behind. Tristan covers my mouth, stopping me from screaming out.

We duck into the thick vegetation.

“Look, there they are.” Tristan motions a bit down the beach to where we spot Evander, Chase, Davian, and Adam all lurking behind a couple of trees.

They don’t see the wolf sneaking up on them.

Fuck.

The black wolf launches into the air, pouncing on Davian’s back.

I cover my mouth to stifle my scream.

The wolf sinks his fangs into his arm. It drags Davian away from the others.

Three more wolves attack.

“Eliana, we—” Tristan snaps his mouth shut.

A figure appears behind him, and I gasp at the sight of Tiffany standing a foot away with a bloody knife. Tears stream down her eyes, and she shakes her head.

“I’m sorry. I had to do that. I didn’t have a choice.” Dropping the knife, Tiffany takes a step back.
