“Shit,” she breathes, huffing in my ear and making me shiver.

“Tell me about it.” I lick my lips, tasting the salt of the sea. “This is fucking hell.”

She blinks a few times and cranes her neck, trying to look around. I realize she’s not focusing on me at all. “It might get worse. Kellan called to me. His pack is coming. They’re the ones on the raft.”

I don’t know whether or not I should be thankful that someone who might be on her side comes or if I should freak the fuck out because Eliana no longer trusts the wolf man. I don’t even know what to think. We’re trapped. There’s no way we’re ever going to get out of here by stealing a boat. I also don’t want to think about the fact that if Kellan’s pack is coming now...who was on the boat? I’ve been bitten by someone from another pack.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you. I’ll die first,” I say, snaking my hand around her waist and into the life vest, sharing it.

“Adam, no. Your life is not worth less than mine.” She peers around again.

“You’re wrong. It is on this island. And I don’t mind. I’ll protect you, Eliana. You don’t deserve this kind of fate. You don’t deserve to bow to a fucking wild man or their twisted desires. It’s fucked up. Disgusting.” I clench my teeth with the words. I could never imagine what it’s like to be her. All I can do is try my best to ensure she’s safe. “Like I said. I don’t think I have much to lose. I’ll either die or transform. I’m not sure about the second. I’d rather make sure you get away from here instead.”

I don’t get a chance to say anymore, because a blinding light illuminates around us as the motor of a boat hums in my ears.

“We got two over here. One’s the female,” a man shouts. “Net them. They might put up a fight.”

I kick my legs, trying to swim with Eliana away from their boat, but I’m too slow. The pain’s too much and I’m exhausted.

A net cascades over us and drags us through the water. Eliana struggles and clings onto me as a couple of men yank us into the small, motorized raft.

I don’t see the others with them. Chase, Tristan, and Evander must still be on the yacht. I can’t see much through my blurry eyes.

“Stay down. Don’t try to fight. It’s time you meet our alpha,” a familiar voice says. “This can be easy or hard, but I know you’re a smart group.”

I shudder as I spot Kellan sitting next to Eliana, helping to pull the net away from her. He was screwing with us and was never on our side. This was probably his plan all along, getting close only to betray us.

“Fucking traitor,” I snap, trying to yank the net off. Something hits me in the back of the head, igniting pain in me. I fall forward and sprawl across the small seat.

Another man ties me up.

I guess it’s time to find out who this alpha really is. And when I do, I’m going to fuck him up. He’s going to realize that no one messes with me. I’ve been training my whole life for this.

I have nothing to lose. I will take them down, even if it’s the last thing I do.

Chapter nineteen

Eliana

Bitten

“WHEREARETHEothers?”I ask, searching around the water.

An unfamiliar man navigates, and Kellan holds me by my wrists, acting as if he’s restraining me, though his hold is easily breakable. I can’t stop the tears from streaming down my cheeks every time I glance at Adam. The other man, a husky, bald asshole hit him over the back of the head, and now he just lays there. I know he’s awake, but he looks defeated.

“They’re not important nor worth our time.” Baldy whacks Adam on the back. “This bitch is lucky he was with you, though we might just drop him halfway to shore. He’s not one of us.”

“Don’t you dare!” I scream, breaking away from Kellan’s hold. “Don’t you fucking dare!”

“Then he can learn his new place right here. He can earn the spot to serve me if he gives me what I want.” The man grabs at the waistband of his shorts.

Shock and horror cools my blood, only to have rage blast through me. Kellan tightens his hold, but I punch him in the thigh, startling him. His grip loosens, and I launch at the man, shoving my hands into his back. He trips and falls off the side of the boat, splashing into the water.

“Fuck, you little bitch!” the other man shouts.

Adam bolts upright as if he was faking his injury and stabs the other man in the gut. I hadn’t realized he was still armed. The blood pouring from the man surprises Kellan, and he tries to snatch me. Something dark comes over me. He’s with these men. If he’s with them, that means he’s not with us. I’m going to be sick. My mind whirls as his voice tangles with my thoughts. He begs me to calm down telepathically, but I can’t. All I can think about is knocking him off the boat. We need to get away.

Kellan focuses on me, not realizing that Adam tenses. He swings his fist, punching Kellan in the jaw hard enough to send him flailing back. Kellan transforms, trying to keep his balance on the boat, but it’s no use. The boat rises and lowers on a wave, and Adam starts the motor, sending us flying forward.
