Kellan surprises me by transforming into his human form. He fists his hands, his muscles rippling and his eyes sparkling. “What the fuck are you talking about? I’m trying to help you. Come on. This way.”

None of us moves. None of us talks either. I don’t know who to believe or how to feel. I don’t trust any of the wolves.

Kellan strides closer, holding his hands up. “Please. The packs are out for a hunt, grabbing and biting anyone they can. If you’ve already been bitten by another pack, they’ll kill you. They don’t want their enemies to grow stronger in numbers.” Kellan looks at me as he says the words. “Eliana, please. It kills me inside to think that you could ever belong to another. You’re my soulmate, even bitten by someone else. I’ll learn to accept that. But right now, we have to go. I have a place we can stay until the full moon passes.”

I heave a couple deep breaths, my whole body buzzing and tingling. His words swirl through my mind, and panic tightens my chest. So not only do we have to face the viciousness of getting bitten, but we also now have to face the possibility of being mauled and killed by others in an attempt to prevent us from changing. I didn’t think things could get any worse. But damn it.

What about Ravi? He was going to help us too. He has the rest of the guys. Even if Kellan is telling the truth, a part of me wants to risk denying him and following Ravi for the fact that at least I can reunite with Tristan, Evander, and Chase. We need each other more than ever.

“Get out of our way. Eliana doesn’t want to go with you, and you need to accept it. We live in a world where you’ll respect her decision. Do you understand? You will not guilt her or pressure her into anything else otherwise.” Adam growls with his words, sounding more beast than man, and the noise is incredibly sexy. Protective is so hot on him.

“I can’t allow it. You’ll get her killed. You don’t understand anything.” Kellan changes his stance, his muscles rippling with his flexing fingers. I hear the thought cross his mind about tackling us and just dragging me away. It freaks me out.

Adam must hear my thoughts, because he doesn’t give Kellan the opportunity. He swings the stick, whacking him in the legs and knocking his feet out from under him. Shoving Davian, he gets him to rush in the other direction. We’re going to head up the creek after all.

“Run. Don’t stop. We need to pass the waterfall and keep going. We’re going to get the others. We’re not going to just submit to anyone.” Adam’s voice deepens with his words. I didn’t know that he could take charge so easily, and I’m ready to do whatever he says. I trust him. Davian does too.

“He’s still a pup, princess. But I respect his ability to make quick decisions. If only you would behave for me. I told you where you were supposed to go. I wouldn’t have to fight anyone else had you just been a good girl for me.” Ravi’s words slap me in the mind, jerking my attention away from the forest around us.

Surprise washes over me. I thought maybe Kellan had won. I don’t even know what to think or how to feel anymore. I just know that his voice brings me relief.

“That’s our mate bond, Eliana. You know that I’ll always take care of you. You’re my girl. You just need to accept it. Once the moon calls...” He hums without finishing his thoughts.

“Shit. They’re coming for me.” Davian gasps with the words, picking up his pace and moving ahead. “They said if I grab you, Eliana, they wouldn’t beat me into submission. They’re fucking crazy.”

Many people would take advantage of the offer. Especially for someone they’ve just met. Especially me. But Davian only encourages us to move faster. He has chosen me and Adam, trusting that we will stand by his side through anything. I won’t break my promise. We’ll be a pack. I don’t care who these assholes think they are. If we stand together, we can fight a lot better than if we just give in and do as they say.

Adam picks up his pace until we cut back in front of Davian to lead the way. I realize it’s because he wants to shield me between their bodies. With me on his back and Davian behind, I’m not as exposed. Wolves can’t attack me from behind. They’ll have to go through Davian first. Or Adam.

More howls sound through the air, and goosebumps prickle over my skin. I feel like we’ve been running forever. My anxiety makes it hard to breathe and think. I brace myself to be attacked at any second. I expect it. We’re at a disadvantage for those who know this island. For those who control everything on it.

“You’re coming up to our camp. Sean is expecting you, but you need to be a good little girl and don’t do anything stupid. Wait for me.” Ravi’s voice prods at my attention.

“How will we know it’s them?” My words sound out loud, my mind struggling to keep everything inside me.

“You will see your group. Now, Adam, let Eliana down. She will go first.” Ravi speaks to both of us telepathically.

Adam slows, shifting me down his back and gently setting me on my feet. Davian grabs my hand. He didn’t hear Ravi and stares at me in confusion. Then we hear voices sounding through the trees. I catch the scent of burning wood. Somebody has a fire going. My stomach growls, the scent of something cooking stirring my hunger.

“Shit. Where do we go?” Davian asks.

“Just stay behind me.” I know I should tell him more, but I don’t. “They’re supposed to be on our side...sort of. The wolf that bit me sent us here. It’s where they are keeping Chase, Tristan, and Evander.”

“Maybe I should hide.” Davian tugs away from me, moving toward the tree. “I don’t belong here. I don’t belong anywhere. I’m sorry, Eliana.”

I turn to Adam. “Go with him. Just listen for me, okay? I need to get closer.

“We can’t separate. That’s fucking insane.” Adam tightens his jaw, looking as Davian ducks beneath a low tree branch. His fear makes him reckless, but I can’t really blame him. He’s been taunted by assholes for who knows how long.

I start after Davian, afraid he’ll vanish. Grabbing Adam’s hand, I tug him along, knowing he won’t leave me. I won’t let Davian leave either. We just found him. “Davian, wait!”

A yell sounds through the air, and I tense and yank Adam harder. Davian appears in the trees again, cocking his head to the side. It wasn’t him who yelled. It was someone else.

“You fuckers! We’ll kill you!” I gawk at Davian and Adam and then whip my attention to where the voice came from. It’s Chase.

He yells again.

A wolf snarls, the sound vicious and feral. Wild.
