Mine. The thought refuses to leave me.

“Get out of here,” Eliana growls, bracing herself for my wolf to arrive. She takes an automatic step back and lands in the creek. The cool water surprises her, and she jumps, her eyes turning away from me and giving me the chance to step out from my hiding place.

“I’ll only be here for a minute. I’m sorry I scared you. I heard you fall and wanted to make sure you were okay.” I offer her a smile, keeping my lips together as to not scare her by baring my teeth.

“There was a wolf. It went that way.” She clutches her branch tighter but doesn’t rush toward me for the protection she should feel she needs from me.

My jaw twitches and I hold my hands up. Her gaze darts down my body, stopping at my dick. Her lingering look sets me off with desire. She enjoys what she sees. I can smell the change of her scent. She might be afraid, but the carnal part of her recognizes me as a potential mate.

“Who the hell are you, anyway? You weren’t with our group. Were you brought here before? Are there others?” She hisses her words, trying to keep quiet but unable to with her wild emotions.

I don’t respond, ignoring her questions for the sole reason that she won’t like the answers. I wasn’t brought here. I was born here. And there are at least four other groups of humans around the island. It would take at least a day for the humans to cross paths. That is, if they were heading toward each other. The chances are slim but not impossible. The packs try to keep each group isolated for the duration of their survival test.

“Hello? Are you going to answer me? You’re staring at me weirdly. Are you a...fuck, you’re a murderer or something. I didn’t even think about that. Uh...” She shifts on her feet, antsy the longer I stare at her. But I can’t help myself. I could just look into her golden eyes forever. She is stunning.

I clear my throat. “I’m sorry. I can’t help myself. It’s just that you’re breathtaking. I’ve never seen such beauty before me in my life.”

She releases an exasperated, breathy laugh. “That’s creepy. You don’t just approach a woman in the forest and tell her she’s pretty when you’re both standing naked.”

I can’t help smiling. “Why not?”

She throws her hands up, unashamedly exposing her body with her annoyance. “Because it’s just weird. Please, answer my questions. Are there others? Where did you come from? Tell me your name.”

“It’s Kellan. As for your other questions...I’m sorry. I don’t have a lot of time. They might be watching, and your group draws near. I can hear them. You need to tell them to work on their quiet approach.” I curl and uncurl my fingers, my body flexing. She darts her gaze down me again, taking an extra look at the desire arousing me.

“Who might be watching? Please, you have to help us if you know anything. Please. I’m scared. They just brought us from a boat and left us. I don’t understand any of this.” She takes a step forward, lowering the branch she’s prepared to use as a weapon.

The gesture of trust strokes at my inner beast, and I cautiously close the space to her. She stops short, still keeping two feet between us.

“Kellan...” The sound of my name whispering from her pouty mouth drives me wild. It’s no longer the other packs I’m worried about. It’s me. I need to go. I’ve already spent far too long with her.

“I’m sorry, I can’t say anything else. I have to go.” Glancing over my shoulder, I peer in the direction I hear her group clomping. “But wait here for a minute. I have a bag of supplies. A knife, some fire starters, and a couple other things. It’s the least I can do for you.” I shuffle back, forcing myself to put space between us before I try to close it again. Her eyes capture mine, refusing to let me go. The sheen glossing over her beautiful gaze stabs deeply into me. I hate how desperately she wants my help, and I can’t give it to her to my full capability. Not yet. I can’t get ahead of myself. My wolf might claim her, but the real test depends on the call of the moon.

She blinks a few times, clearing her tears before they spill. “You’ll give me supplies?”

I nod my head. “I disagree with what they’ve done to you and the other humans. But I wish you well, Eliana. Try not to stray too far past this creek.” I spin on my feet and tread toward the trees.

“Kellan, wait! You know my name!” Eliana shouts.

I pick up my pace until I’m out of sight. It hurts me to leave her, but I need to. If I stay any longer, I don’t think my heart will allow me to stray even a foot from her.

I transform back into my wolf self and find where I left the bag of supplies. I carefully and quietly move through the trees, listening to her shout my name again and again. She only stops when I stand before her, holding the bag between my teeth as my wolf.

Fear crosses her expression, her eyebrows shooting up on her head, and then confusion twists her lips. I shouldn’t have approached her like this. It’ll only make things worse. But I couldn’t help myself. My wolf wanted to be close to her one last time.

“He’s one of them. That bastard. Fuck.” She whispers the words so quietly that a normal human wouldn’t hear them. But I do. Clutching the branch tighter, she guards her body the best she can from my beast. “You’re his pet, aren’t you, wolfie? That’s why you haven’t attacked.”

Her mortal mind won’t let her comprehend the possibility of anything other than me as a wolf being a pure animal and not a shifter. I don’t understand why the concept is so hard on some, but she will learn soon enough.

I pad my way closer, and she shuffles back, stepping into the creek again. I drop the bag on the pebbly bank and whimper. She doesn’t move. I’m pretty sure she’s holding her breath. And then I hear the men from her group approaching, cutting a path clear through the wilderness.

It’s the only reason I run.

But I won’t go far.

Eliana will be mine.
