Chapter one

Eliana

Brutal Alpha

Painswellsinmywrists as I fight against the bindings. I don’t know how long I’ve been here, but I fell asleep once. Maybe a day. Two at the most. The single door in the dank room gives nothing away. I don’t even know where I am.

I rub my palms together, heating my hands. The ropes roll down my wrists, lower and lower. Except I can’t loosen them, and they don’t go much further. This is the billionth attempt to get them off, and I hate myself for not being able to do it like all of the videos I used to watch. If only I knew I’d truly be kidnapped—multiple times—then I might’ve actually tried to put it to the test.

“Sweetie, if you keep fighting, you’re going to hurt yourself. Your skin looks like it’s turning raw.” The short man with long brown hair strolls a few feet closer to me.

I’ve ignored him since the moment he came in, smiling and calling me pet names. Keeping his arms at his sides and his muscles relaxed, he offers me a pout instead, matching my own expression. I think he might be the infraborne of the pack. But I can’t be certain. I haven’t had a chance to study anyone. Not that I’m complaining. I’d rather be here than on display or getting beaten into submission or whatever.

The man shuffles a bit closer, holding out his palm, showing me nothing in particular. Maybe he wants me to smell him or something. I don’t know, nor do I care. His small frame doesn’t fill much of the space above me, and he’s far from intimidating, not like many of the other guys I’ve seen before being brought into this cell-like room.

“Please, take a breath and calm down. If you do, I can finally unlatch you, and you can eat like a human while giving your arms a rest. If you don’t, the only way Mr. Kai will let you eat will be as a wolf,” he adds, getting into my personal space.

“You have to let me go. I don’t belong here.” My voice shakes with my words, but I don’t stop trying to break free of the rope binding my hands to the concrete wall. The anchor jiggles without relenting. I’m not strong enough to yank it free and they’re just too damn tight to slide off. “You can say that I broke out and ran away. Please. You can help me. I can tell you’re not like the other men around here.”

“Because I’m not a man. I’m Mr. Kai’s Good Boy. He’s a decent man when you behave. He’ll make sure to find you a good alpha. But you must listen to me first. I am trying to help you, sweetie. You don’t want to find out what happens if you don’t just calm down. If you don’t listen to me...please. Just listen. Don’t fight me and realize who’s in control here. I want to unbind you, I do, but I have orders.” The man steps closer, his features remaining soft and submissive. At least that’s something. The alpha who kidnapped me would probably shove my face into a bowl of food and try to force me to eat. He’d probably ensure that I’m not even capable of fighting.

Goddess, help me. The prayer comes so naturally that I almost believe in my words and that there is a deity listening and waiting for my pleas.

Except only silence and pity greets me from Mr. Kai’s supposedly Good Boy.

“Telling me to behave doesn’t help me. Letting me go will. Please, listen to me. I already have an alpha and a pack. How would you feel if somebody kidnapped you and took you away from...Mr. Kai?” I cringe as I say the words, wondering how brainwashed this man is. He’s clearly far from a boy, and I think he might have been beaten into submission so now he’s just running on his survival instincts.

“If my next alpha is as protective as he is, then I would be fine. You will see. Mr. Kai isn’t yours, but he will find you a good one. I promise. Now, sweetie. Hold still and let me remove the ropes. Don’t get the both of us in trouble by fighting. If you escape, I’ll be the one punished first. Then you.” The man slowly raises his hands, treating me as if I am a wild, vicious animal instead of a scared, annoyed woman.

It’s now that I realize he’s restrained by his ankle, the tether long enough for him to move about and how he managed to come into the room. If he lets me go, he wouldn’t even be able to chase me if I make it outside. I could escape. I should try. If only he hadn’t locked the heavy metal door, complicating things a bit. I’d have to take him down first, steal the key, and manage to get far enough away that he couldn’t stop me. He probably knows this and has more confidence in his ability to ensure I stay, which is why he’s willing to free me, and he is giving me this chance. He trusts that even if I try, I won’t get away.

It means that I’m going to have to wait this out until he opens the door again. I don’t want to hurt this infraborne more than I have to. As for the possibility of others being behind the door? I will go after them without remorse. Maybe I can even use the ropes to help me because there’s nothing else here that I can use as a weapon.

“Easy now. I’m not going to hurt you. Like I said, I’m going to help you. I’m sure your arms ache from being bound like that for so long. I can give you some lotion to help with the burns from your struggling. After that, you can eat a nice meal. I made it for you myself. Don’t worry. It’s similar to something you would eat in the human world. I know you probably are a bit picky right now since you haven’t had the chance to get acquainted with your true form. Mr. Kai wanted to throw you some wild game from a hunt.” The man gently unties the ropes around my wrists, freeing me from the wall. “My name is Clemmy, by the way. I’m the caretaker of the Mistharbor pack.”

“Eliana,” I say, rubbing my wrist with my cool fingers. Now that I’m not fighting against the ropes, the aches of my body kick in, and I shiver at the cold temperature. At least I’m not naked. While it doesn’t change how fucked up this is, I do appreciate that the bastard Mr. Kai gave me a shirt to wear. He didn’t want me to tempt one of his packmates, which I would have. Desperate times do that kind of shit to me. My body is my most powerful weapon and prize.

Except with Clemmy. He won’t even give me a second look. No lust or desire crosses his features. He might not even like women. I’m pretty sure that even if I got naked and told him he could claim me if he let me go, I still wouldn’t be able to tempt him. His loyalty and obedience show in every word and gesture. He truly is Mr. Kai’s Good Boy. I’ll need someone else to tend to me if I want to use my body to my advantage.

“It’s nice to meet you, Eliana.” His words knock me from my thoughts. He pats my shoulder. “I hope that we will be able to remain friends when you get your alpha. All of those who are competing for you happen to be allies of Mistharbor, so it’ll be nice if we had the chance to bond as allies as well. It’s been a while since Mr. Kai allowed me any sort of companionship apart from himself. I feel rather lucky. You should too. He’s a good man and will ensure you have a strong, protective pack.” Clemmy smiles at me, speaking as if we are already best friends. I feel bad for the man, but not bad enough to ever consider being his friend. He’s brainwashed and would probably turn against me the second his alpha told him to.

So, I need to be smart about this.

If I’m not going to try to murder this infraborne to escape, I can still use him. He can give me information. I still haven’t had the chance to really learn about Shadow Moon Island and the packs. Since I can’t really do anything other than talk to him, I might as well play a secret game of twenty questions.

I lick my lips and nod, shifting on my feet. Hugging myself, I try to smooth out the goosebumps on my skin. “Do you know all of the packs that are competing for me? What exactly do you mean by that? Are they playing a game?”

Again, Clemmy offers me a smile. “You’re worth more than being won by a simple game. The alphas interested in taking on an omega will fight for you. Some will die for the chance, but others can also quit and run back to their packs with their tails between their legs. But I have a good feeling about this. They will give it their all for you. You are an incredible moon chosen she-wolf.”

“So why doesn’t Mr. Kai keep me for himself? Am I not worthy enough for him?” I swivel on the balls of my feet, taking in the room. It’s empty apart from an open toilet, sink, and a sleeping bag that hasn’t been used. It’s too far away from where I was restrained. Mr. Kai wanted to torture me by withholding the things I need as a prisoner. It’s rather fucked up.

And now that I think about my body’s needs, I can’t stop from dodging around Clemmy. My dehydration and reluctance to go has been the only thing stopping me from pissing myself. It was hard enough popping a squat in the wild, and I’m glad I didn’t have to resort to it here. I’ve already been humiliated and depraved enough. I might as well take advantage of this cruel setup while I can.

Clemmy realizes what I’m about to do in my sudden desperation and turns his back, facing the wall. His kindness keeps surprising me. He understands the norms I’m used to and adjusts accordingly. If he wasn’t so brainwashed, he could make a good ally.

If only his kindness would shift to actually helping me escape than just hoping neither of us gets beaten or worse.

Clemmy scratches his fingers to the back of his head, messing with his hair. He ignores me as I do my business, clears his throat, and finally responds with, “Mr. Kai already has his Baby Girl. He and Tonya have been together for many years. She was like you. Moon chosen and irresistible. He got her in the same way he plans to help you find an alpha. If you are compliant, I can always ask Mr. Kai if you can meet Baby Girl.”
