Yowling until he shifts back into a human, Clemmy groans. “Oh, no, sir. Haven’t you heard the news running through the packs? Those alphas plan to reject any human-born as mates and kill them. It would be—”

Swinging his fist, Kai punches Clemmy in the face, knocking him a couple feet away. I startle and stare in shock as the alpha abandons me and snatches his infraborne from the floor, lifting him by his neck and off his feet. Clemmy remains placid, not fighting against the strength of his alpha.

“Mind your mouth, Clemmy. It is not your place to spread rumors. The alphas that compete have proven themselves worthy of taking an omega. What they do after is none of our business.” Kai drops Clemmy, letting him hit the ground with a thump. Kicking him, he rolls Clemmy toward the wall.

Clemmy cries out but doesn’t fight back.

My body tenses, my ability to act like a broken woman vanishing with another kick from Kai to Clemmy’s exposed groin.

I reach for my discarded rope and push to my feet. Clemmy’s groans grow louder until he transforms back into a wolf. Kai doesn’t pay attention to me as I sneak up behind him. Barking, Clemmy calls a warning to his alpha, despite the asshole beating him up, but he’s not quick enough.

I fling the rope over Kai’s head and yank. Spinning on the balls of my feet, I twist the rope until Kai’s growls silence. He swings me, trying to throw me off. I refuse to let go. I refuse to let this man sell me to another pack—especially ones that want to breed or kill me. Fuck that.

“Sweetie, stop! Stop!” Clemmy yells, shaking on his arms as he tries to stand. “You don’t have to protect me. I’ve been bad. I should’ve minded my mouth.”

I can’t believe this. This guy is so brainwashed to obey. It hurts me to even think that he’s lived his life like this, under the influence and hostile authority of this bastard alpha.

I don’t stop. I won’t stop. Not until Kai is on his knees.

“Eliana, I said stop!” Clemmy crawls in my direction, but he’s too weak to get to his feet. “Please! Asa is coming!”

I don’t even have a chance to process the low guttural noise of a wolf growling before paws smash into my back and knock me into Kai. I release the rope, allowing the bastard to breathe again. He swings his elbow back and strikes me in the ribs. I wheeze a breath and my vision shadows.

Teeth lock onto my shirt and drag me off Kai. The tan wolf towers over me, pinning me down with the weight of its muscular body. Kai growls and whips his attention from me and back to Clemmy.

“This is your fault. She wouldn’t have done this had you remembered your place.” Kai stomps toward Clemmy again. Bending down, he drags the man up and spins him to look at me. “Do you see her? You got her all riled up, and now she will disobey my orders. I have to put her in her place, and I will use you to do so.”

“Please, forgive me, Mr. Kai. Please. I’m sorry. I was just scared for her life. She’s too precious to waste on a pack that can’t see how incredible she is.” Clemmy’s eyes water as tears trail down his cheeks. “I will accept whatever punishment you deem necessary. But please. Don’t get her killed.”

Kai roars, his eyes flashing gold as his wolf peeks through. “That will be up to her.” He narrows his eyes at me, flaring his nostrils. “And let this be a lesson to you, Eliana. You are here to serve. You are here to obey. You do not speak when you are not spoken to. You do not fight. You don’t do anything except be a good she-wolf. I’m gonna show you what happens if you don’t listen.”

I gasp and cover my mouth, my whole body chilling. Jerking Clemmy’s head, Kai breaks the man’s neck, killing him before me. Because of me. He would’ve never felt the need had I just stood by and done nothing. Now he’s dead.

I can’t speak. I can’t find the will to do anything but stare at Clemmy’s body.

Hopelessness consumes me.

The wolf towering over me snaps his teeth into my hair. He drags me away.

Chapter two

Eliana

Alpha Competition

“Standhereuntilyou’retold to move.” Kai motions toward the wolf guarding me. “Transform, Asa. I want your hand on her at all times. I don’t trust she won’t try to run.”

The wolf stretches forward in a bow and contorts into a humanoid form until I see him as a man. His long back arches, showing off his muscular body, and I can’t stop staring at his naked ass. For being a jerk, he’s handsome...in a wild way. His sharp features hide behind a scruffy light brown beard, and his hair drapes across his shoulders. A tattoo marks his shoulder with a series of intricate lines, and dozens of scars decorate his skin.

Pushing to his feet, Asa turns and scowls at me with his green eyes. It’s all it takes to turn him into one of the ugliest men I have ever seen. He strides forward and snatches my arm, yanking me to him. I stumble and crash into his side, his warm body flush against mine. From his arousal, I can tell he likes our closeness, but he’s far too loyal to his alpha to manipulate. I can already tell. There’s no point in trying to strategize a way to seduce him.

“Keep your eyes on the ground, Eliana. Your attention will get you in trouble. I’m not interested in you. I have a mate. If you don’t settle down and get your lust for me in control, I will have to toss you into the creek to wash your seductress scent away.” Asa releases a low grumble with his threat.

Anger pours through me, and I raise my hand, preparing to smack him. My good senses stop me. I know if I try anything, he’ll hurt me. He’d probably humiliate me or something by spanking me. I wouldn’t put it past any of these men. They see me as beneath them at the same time as they crave for me to be beneath them. I bet if Kai wasn’t watching the two of us interact, Asa would act differently.

“Listen to my betaborne, girl. The last thing I want is to have you clean. Your pheromones will drive the alphas wild and get them to put on one hell of a show. That won’t be possible if you’re a disobedient little bitch. Like I said, do as you’re told, and everything will be fine.” Kai gets into my face and breathes a warm breath against my ear. “Consider this your first lesson. You should also say a prayer for a good alpha. One who won’t destroy you for your sole existence of being a half-breed.”

My chest heaves as I try to keep myself in control. The more they speak to me, the harder it becomes. I wish I had a weapon. I wish I had help from the men I thought would be my pack. But right now? It’s just me like it has always been. Me relying on myself to stay out of trouble and to survive another night. My shitty luck. I don’t know why I expected otherwise. Bowing to Ravi was better than this. I should’ve counted my blessings then, but...oh, fucking well.
