What have I done?

The call of my alpha was strong on the full moon, and I couldn’t control myself when I was forced to leave Eliana, but with dawn, it grew easier. But I realize it was not because of the setting moon. It was because Isaac loosened his hold on me. What if I fail? What if things change?

A deep growl reverberates across my back, triggering my wolf to break free. I howl with my transformation, my muscles spasming through the ache. My vision adjusts, and I whip my attention toward the growl, spotting a hulking, unfamiliar wolf.

“Go on, Van. It’s okay. Crystalrock is a possible ally with news. Go catch up to the others.” Isaac swats at my backside, getting my body to move.

Something dark rises inside me, but I don’t linger. I do as Isaac commands and tear ass through the trees. I make it twenty feet into the forest with dark shells scattering the ground from where the high tide rises. A familiar scent captures my attention, stealing my focus from the howls of my pack.

Spinning, I search the world around me. A blond wolf pounces in front of me, blocking my path. I snarl and snap my teeth, getting within inches of Tristan’s snout.

“Evander, it’s me.” Tristan growls with his thought, scrambling back.

I launch at him, shoving into his wolf, knocking him off his paws. I land on his chest and get in his face. Darting out my tongue, I lick the bastard. “You fucker. I almost bit your face off. What the hell are you doing here? You know you can’t be in Blackshell unannounced.”

“I found Eliana.” Tristan nips at me, getting me to shift off him. “Come on. I’ll take you to her.”

My body freezes at his words. Eliana is with him? Fuck. I automatically take a few steps, my instincts to follow him kicking on. “Where is she? How?”

Tristan barks with his laugh, his voice lightening my soul. “It’s complicated, man. I barely managed to make it into the territory. There is so much shit going on. Ravi—”

A howl rips through the air, cutting him off. My body zings with the call of Isaac as he alerts the rest of the pack to return. Someone must’ve found something already or our territory is clear.

“Shit, come on. We have to go. Hurry.” Tristan circles me, getting into my face. “Someone’s coming.”

I remain stuck in my place. My muscles seize, stopping me from moving.

Tristan rams into me. “Quick. Eliana wants to leave the island. We can’t leave you. You’re a part of our pack.”

A part of his pack? No. The second Isaac bit me, that promise shattered into a million pieces. Not by my own free will but because of the call of the alpha.

And the same call drags me a step away.

“Evander,” Tristan says, trying to bite at my back leg. “Please.”

Something dark grabs hold of me. A million thoughts swirl through my mind. I can’t think. I can’t hear anything in the forest around me.

“Evander,” Tristan repeats. “Come the fuck on.”

I tip my head back and howl. I can’t stop myself as my wolf shouts for my pack. Tristan growls and circles me one last time. The forest around us shifts and moves, a couple of my pack members closing in on us.

“Damn it! Snap out of it. Eliana needs you.” Tristan attempts to grab me by the scruff of my neck, but I don’t budge.

A giant black wolf crashes through the trees, snarling with a guttural growl. Scrambling back, Tristan dashes away and disappears between two trees. My chest tightens. What is wrong with me? I need to go with him. Why can’t I get my legs to work? Why did I call out to Blackshell?

“Van! What’s up? Who was it?” Isaac asks, skidding to a stop in his wolf form.

His closeness snaps me out of my dumbfound state. “I...I don’t know. Someone from...Twilight Cove.”

If he sees through my lie, he doesn’t say so. Instead, he yips, calling out. A couple of wolves rush past us and in the direction Tristan ran.

“Nice job. We’ll find the fucker,” Isaac says, nudging me with his snout. “Now, come on. I want you back in the community. You did great.”

My paws automatically move to follow him.

There is nothing I can do as Isaac commands me to stay by his side.

My heart aches as I lose myself to my wolf.
