“You’re forgetting something, asshole.” Ravi comes closer and takes my other hand. “One of us needs to claim a soul bond with her. We need to ensure that the packs know that no one is to touch Eliana. It should be me. She bowed to me first, and I need to prove my worth as an alpha. Are you going to fight me for this?”

Fuck. I forgot about that. It feels as if just when I start to learn things, more questions come up. I wish there were some damn manual that would tell me what to expect, what I need to avoid, and what I should look forward to.

“We’ll be official allies with the territory exchange, so no. I will only challenge you if you fail to keep your word. As much as I would love to have Eliana under my pack name, I know you will fight me. I don’t want to embarrass you in front of your pack like that when you know who is the more powerful of us two.” Slater grins with his words, his egging on of Ravi turning the other alpha into a tense ball of anger.

I spin and hold my hands up. “Don’t start anything.” I turn to Slater and narrow my eyes at him. “You have to knock that shit off too. We are trying to work together, remember?”

The two alphas relax and fall silent. Voices sound from the living room, drawing my attention away from them. I reach behind me and grab Chase and Adam’s hands, proving that I won’t tolerate being tugged between the two packs. I’m here because I have to be. I’ll give them a chance, but they will definitely have to earn it. Right now, I need to be with those I know I can trust. Chase and Adam will follow me anywhere. As for Ravi and Slater? I’m not so sure. I have a feeling that they will fight for me to stay here instead.

“You forgot about me, my love. You know I do follow you everywhere. Look at where I am.” Kellan’s husky voice captures me, and I whip my gaze to look at him as he sits next to Tristan. Davian slouches on the other side, and it isn’t until right now that I suddenly feel the absence of Evander. Fuck. It makes me anxious just knowing that he couldn’t resist his alpha. He should be here already, and it’ll take more than a plea from Tristan to join us. I feel as if none of this will work out unless we are all together. I can’t just forget him. He wouldn’t forget me.

“Don’t worry, pup. We’ll get Evander back. I just need to figure out what to offer my ally in exchange. He’s not in danger or in despair.” Slater meanders past me and takes a seat on one of the two open recliners. He pats his knee expectantly, seeing if I will go to him.

I nearly do. If Adam and Chase weren’t holding onto my hands, guiding me to the couch, I bet my wolf would obey Slater’s silent command.

Instead, I follow beside them and head toward where Kellan scoots closer to Davian, allowing a foot of space between him and Tristan. I barely hit my ass to the couch before the front door flings open and snow flurries dance from outside as a wolf barrels in.

Slater rises to his feet. “What do you mean a meeting?” he asks the wolf out loud, the response strange since I couldn’t hear his thoughts. I don’t know the man by name yet, but I think it’s Slater’s betaborne. “The alphas on the west are far too hostile right now.”

The wolf howls as he transforms, standing naked before us. “It’s not the alphas. It’s the council. They’ve summoned us to Starrise Island...well, summoned you.” He looks at Ravi. “And you.”

My heart skips a beat at his words. Glancing at the rest of us on the couch, he adds, “You as well, Eliana.”

What the actual fuck?

Slater rubs the back of his neck. “Gather the others. We’re heading out as a pack.” Extending his hand, Slater motions in my direction. “Come on, pup. You’re coming with me.”

“Like hell!” Ravi shouts.

Slater growls, his muscles cording with his stiffness. “I said she’s coming with me. You may follow if you want, but my word is final.”

Damn, Slater is hot commanding Ravi like this, putting him in his place.

“Fucking fine. But you better not try anything stupid.” Ravi motions to Chase and Adam. “Get the others. This could very well change everything.”

Shit. Just when I thought things were getting settled.

The universe must really hate me.

Chapter seventeen

Ravi

Alpha Attitude

Thisfuckingdickhead.Hepurposely wants me to act as his betaborne. I’ve been in that position for far too long, and I’ve seen what these bastards are capable of. He might be a nice guy at the moment, but as soon as he gets what he wants, he’s not going to be any better than Sean. If that asshole would’ve taken my advice, we wouldn’t be in this position. I wouldn’t have had to kill him.

I suppress my thoughts of him. This new situation opens me up to a hell of a lot of unwanted memories. Sean wasn’t always an asshole. I think it’s why I remain guarded. I wish I didn’t feel the need to push my power and strength. I know Eliana wouldn’t even consider me otherwise. And damn. She is the most beautiful, fierce, smartest woman I have ever met. I hadn’t realized how much I wanted someone like her in my life until I caught her scent. I knew she would be perfect for my future, helping me gain power among the island dwellers.

Because this island has been created as a place to contain us. Eliana and the new pups have no idea what awaits them outside of our sanctuary. Of course, they wouldn’t consider this savage place a safe haven, but that’s only because they weren’t born here. They haven’t even been here for a full moon cycle. The other alphas on the island have made it so they will probably never accept any of our packs. So, I will make them. I will do what it takes. Even if it means agreeing to stand beside Slater. He has always been an outcast among the lykoswulves and how he has isolated his pack on this mountainside. It’s cold as fuck. I have a major case of shrinkage, and all I want to do is transform into my wolf and curl up by the damn fire.

“We leave in five. You know the rules. Make sure you keep your damn alpha attitude in control. If they consider you a threat to them, they will leash your ass. You don’t want that to happen. I’ve seen it done before.” Slater rubs his hands together and bounces on the balls of his feet.

“This isn’t my first fucking meeting. I’ve been to a couple before with Sean.” His ability to get under my skin drives me insane. Slater shouldn’t have that kind of control over me. I’m an alpha now. I know how this fucking world works, and I don’t need his damn insight. What I need is for him to understand that just because I’m new to this position doesn’t mean I’m any less. I guess I’m going to have to prove it.

“If this isn’t your first meeting, you need to tell me what to expect. I’m tired of you guys not giving me any answers.” Eliana places her hands on her hips, eyeing Slater over me.

I clench my jaw. She should be asking me for the answers, and because she doesn’t, it makes me want to keep my mouth shut. She entices and infuriates me at once. She makes me want to get on my knees but also bend her over my damn lap to spank her. She doesn’t seem like the type to want such a thing though. I’ve lost my leverage to keep her close until she realizes I am a better alpha, and I now have to figure out how to win her over completely.
