We watch him go. My whole body stiffens as the realization sets in. This isn’t over. We’ll still have to answer for everything.

We need to act first.

We need to act now.

Reaching into my jacket, I unholster my gun. I will end this today. I’ll get justice for how Holly was treated. I will fight and ensure that the king can’t ruin our future with Kinsey.

Gilded Sands is ours.

I’m going to take it.

I’ve run out of patience. The king’s reign ends here.

Chapter 29

Kinsey

Biggest Monster

Myheartstopsatthe sight of Enzo striding toward the foyer, clutching his gun in his hand. My stomach twists. I can smell his powerful fury from my spot beside Desmond. His father’s reaction toward Holly sets him off, and he loses himself to the monster he needs to be to protect us.

But I fear that his father might still be a bigger monster.

“Arsenio, stop him!” I call, trying to break away from Desmond. “Enzo, please. Come back here.”

He looks at me over his shoulder and shakes his head. “This has to be done.”

Except I know what happens if he kills his father before they take over the territory. His father must bow down to one of them as the next heir, or it will leave everyone open for a hostile takeover.

Arsenio charges after him, latching his hands to his shoulders and yanking him back. The gun goes off, the pop deafening. I cover my ears, standing in shock. The bullet hits the wall and ricochets, fissuring one of the framed pictures. I rush forward, my mind whirling. I reach Arsenio and Enzo, getting between them and giving them each a once-over, ensuring that neither of them was hit by the stray bullet.

Enzo growls and tries to take advantage of the distraction, but this time I grab onto him, letting him drag me a foot before he realizes I’m not letting him go.

“Enzo, stop. I mean it!” My voice booms through the room, my need to get him to see things clearly tensing my body. “If you kill him, this will all be over. You know what will happen.”

“Our chances are better. I don’t care if it leaves us open to a war. We need to take out our enemies immediately. I’ll not put you in the line of danger. I would not risk him coming up with a way to retaliate. You saw how he reacted when he didn’t get his way. He’s unhinged. He has no business being a king.” Enzo laces his fingers around my wrist, stroking his thumb until I can’t hold on to his shirt.

My fingers loosen, and he holds my hand, pulling me close until my body rests flush against his. His blue eyes darken with the hot spice of his anger mixed with something sweeter. His desire breaks through, my closeness easing his wild aggression.

“And he won’t be. But it needs to follow tradition. We will already be shaking up enough as it is, brother.” Arsenio stands behind Enzo, grabbing his gun and turning the safety back on. He doesn’t give it back, choosing to tuck it away instead as if he doesn’t trust Enzo not to go after their father as soon as he has a chance.

“I know, but what if it all falls apart? I can’t risk losing Kinsey. The way he acted with Holly? Fucking despicable. He needs to pay for that. He needs to face the consequences of his actions. He’s not leadership material. I don’t know what the fuck got to his head, but we can’t continue on like this.” Enzo shifts on his feet, eyeing the grand corridor that leads directly to the front door of the palace.

Arsenio blocks him, anticipating him to dodge past him. The two of them standoff, their muscles flexing, their eyes never breaking from their staring contest. This is one hell of an alpha challenge, and it makes my whole body hum. This is not the time for me to be turned on, but seeing them so worked up? Smelling their scents and knowing that they’re going wild because of me? It gets to me in a good way. I feel as if I’m the most important woman in the world. And to them? I know I am.

“Let him go, Enzo. The king got in his car and is pulling away.” Desmond grasps Holly by her elbow. “He needs to run or some shit. Go to the gym, Enzo. I need you to cool off. But don’t you fucking try to leave this palace to go after him.”

I grab Enzo by the front of the shirt and pull him to me, standing on my tiptoes to kiss his jaw. “I’ll go with you. I need to run off this adrenaline or something. I can’t stop shaking.”

My comment does the trick, getting him to break away from his challenge to Arsenio. His features soften, and he tilts his chin down, kissing me sensually, awakening more desire inside me.

“Please, take care of me. We both need to settle down.” I rub my hand across his neck and down his chest, his all-consuming presence making it easy to push away the world around us.

I hear the others leave as Wilder arrives, but he doesn’t say anything to either of us. He lets me give his brother my utmost attention.

Enzo lifts me up, carrying me toward a secret passageway that’ll take us to his wing of the palace. My heart picks up pace as my body relaxes, knowing that the others will have things in control by the time I get Enzo to settle down. I know how much he needs my attention. To know I have faith in him and that I believe we’ll get through this regardless. And it’s not only his father’s actions that get to him. He feels as if he’s lost someone. His father isn’t the man he thought he was, and it just keeps getting worse and worse for him. I understand. I thought the same when my uncle broke up my family and killed my parents. When he betrayed me.

But I don’t want to think about that now. All I want to focus on is Enzo and how good his arms feel around me as he lowers me just a bit to feel the length of his hard-on pressing against his pants, ready and throbbing for my body.
