“Told you that you’d laugh,” he grumbles despite fighting a smile. “So rude.”

“I just – do you even know how to make art?”

Nathan rolls his eyes. “I’m a normal human being, Carter. I went to public school. Art classes were required until high school.”

“Okay, true.” Carter tries to picture the man in an art class – younger, of course. A teenager. He can’t see it. “What kind of art?”

“I liked a little bit of everything, but drawing was always my favorite.”

“Are you any good?”

Nathan shrugs, his cheeks going red again. “Art is subjective.”

“Then let me see!”

“That’s a hard no.”

Carter pushes at his shoulder, feeling light and airy inside. “I’m serious – let me!”

“I have nothing to show you. I can’t even remember the last time I drew.” He shrugs, looking… sad. “Travis is the artist.”

“Well, you’re about to be Travis again. Think of it as a warmup.”

“Think of what as a warmup?”“Draw me something.”

Nathan laughs. Then he looks at Carter and seems to realize he’s serious. “No.”

“Please?” Carter puffs out his bottom lip and bats his eyelashes. “Pretty please?”

“Fucking hell,” the man mutters under his breath before seeming to tear his gaze away from Carter. He rubs at the back of his neck. “Fine. I’ll draw something for you. But not right now. Time is up.”

“Fiiine.” Carter feels much better about the outlook of the day now. “I want a drawing before the party, though. Don’t go putting it off and then get yourself killed. I’ll be pissed.”

“Pissed that I died before showing you my art?”

“Precisely.”

“Only that reason?” Nathan asks with a smile, one eyebrow arched.

Carter sticks his tongue out at him. “Yup.”

“You wound me.” Nathan clips the leash onto his collar and taps him on the tip of his nose. Something complicated and a little scary happens to Carter’s heart. “Ready?”

He’s no longer so sure...“Ready.”
