“Technically, sure. But it’s also the part where you free Carter. And the part where you finally get to be done with these shitheads. And the part that we’ve had planned for over two years with so many contingency plans that even the director said it might be excessive. That’s something, right?”

The part where you free Carter.

Nathan really shouldn’t feel as conflicted about that as he does.

“Do you know what Carter’s plan is? After this?”

There’s a pause like Maison is thrown off by the question. “Considering he hates me, no, he hasn’t shared his plans. I had hoped he’d shared them with you.”

“Mmm.” Nathan glances over at the door.Is Carter naked beneath the blankets?Probably not. That’d be weird with Casey.

Unless… him and Casey fooled around?

Fuck, Nathan had never considered that.

With Casey, Carter has true consent.

With Casey, Carter could top if he wanted to –does Carter want to top?

With Casey, Carter doesn’t have to worry about his broken heart.

“Nathan?”

Nathan flinches at the tone of Maison’s voice. It sounds like he’s called his name more than once. “Sorry, what?”

“I said you should ask him. It’s good for us to know before we move into the final stage.”

“He hates me just as much as he hates you. Why would he tell me his plans?”

Maison scoffs. “Even if I believed that, I still think you’d be able to get him to talk. I have faith in you.”

“I’ll do my best. No promises.” Nathan glances at the door again. What if he slept with Casey?

“When do you want to catch me?”

“Huh?”

Maison makes a frustrated sound. “Do you need to go to bed and discuss this tomorrow? Because we can’t fuck this up. Pay attention or go get some rest and we’ll talk later.”

“No, I’m here. I’m focused. Sorry.”

“Then when do you want to catch me? I’m assuming in the next few days?”

“Yeah.” Nathan rubs a hand over his face. Maison is right, they’ve planned this part down to the minute. It helps now that they have Carter. Makes it so much more believable, as terrible as that sounds. Maison is going to go rogue and try to infiltrate the compound. Before, it was to assassinate Nathan. Now, it’ll be to rescue Carter. Of course, in both versions Maison gets caught. He’ll get his ass beat. Nathan will get the great idea of throwing a celebration. A party where all his new employees and allies can come and enjoy the greatest feat of their business – taking down the biggest enemy of all. At this celebration, the case will come to a beautiful, deadly end. “How soon can you come?”

“Minimum is probably 16 hours.”

Nathan checks his watch, doing the math. “Come during after-dinner drinks. 8 o’clock. 2100. It’s not believable for you to think you can make this alone, so when I ask, say you knew it was a longshot but figured it was worth it if you just got a chance to see Carter before you got caught. To show him you’re fighting for him.”

“That’s good, yeah. I can do that.” There’s an awkward pause. Then, “So… tomorrow night?”

“Tomorrow night.”

Maison takes in a deep breath that shakes. Nathan can’t blame him. For the first time in all of this, he’s going to be putting himself in true danger. He’s going to be on the front lines. And he’s guaranteed to get the beating of his life.

“Same limits as before?” Nathan asks, hating that he must.

Soon, he’ll never have to worry about a Beckett brother’s limits ever again.
