“All I know is her name must start with an M,” I say.

Delilah shoves more things into the suitcases. “Don’t worry about it or her. There’s nothing you can do about either of them.”

I throw my hands in the air. “How can you say that? It was clear she was running from something or someone. There was pure fear in her eyes. I’ve never seen that look in anyone I know. It doesn’t make me feel right, not trying to find out what happened to her or if she needs help.”

Delilah stops. “So don’t give up. Keep your distance and track the fence lines daily. If M is there, she’ll eventually come out again. You have to be respectful and not stalkerish.”

“Okay, that sounds like a good plan. You’ll be hearing from me with whatever I find out, just so you know.” I grin.

“I wouldn’t expect anything less.” She goes back to packing. “Can you believe I’m engaged to Sebastian King? I still can’t wrap my head around it.”

“Gag, no thanks to the commitment. It scares the living heck out of me. I’m happy living at home and wooing ladies too much. I’ve got it good here.”

She stops and gives me a deadpan look.

“What?”

“Why are you so interested in that girlM?” She accentuates the M.

“Because I want to know she’s okay,” I snap.

“Yeah, yeah,” she responds dryly. “I’ve got to finish packing. I want to say thanks for being my constant lately. From the moment I came home, you had my back. I couldn’t ask for a better younger brother.”

“I may be younger, but I’m still taller than you.”

“Shut up.”

“Ready to go?” Sebastian stands in the doorway.

Delilah’s face lights up, and I know this is right for her. She zips up her suitcases and faces him. “Yep.” They grab the bags and walk out the door.

I follow, so I can say goodbye.

I can’t see myself falling hard like that. Nope, no way. People get hurt. I’ve seen it too many times, and no girl wants to live on a ranch, which again makes the idea of commitment another hard pass for me. Besides, city girls are all about clothes, money, and nightclubs.

Maybe one day I’ll settle down, but that day’s not here yet. This bachelor is one happy cowboy, and right now, I’m going to get Buster and run the fence line.

Purely to check she’s okay, of course.

There’s absolutely no other reason.
