“Ugh. Fine.”

The age gap between my sister, Nora, and me was more like Avery and the toddler. There were almost ten years between us, and we hadn’t gone through this bickering stage.

The drive to the parking lot went faster than I wanted. When Emery parked by my pickup, her cheeks took on a pretty pink hue. I didn’t have to ask if she remembered what had happened in the back seat two weeks ago.

I didn’t fucking forget.

“Thanks,” she said, her hands gripping the steering wheel. “For helping with the kids.”

“I don’t know how I helped.”

“Keeping them in the room is sometimes enough.”

I had expected her to be more worked up about leaving three kids with a near stranger.

I didn’t feel like a stranger to Emery. There was so much I wanted to know about her. Why four kids? What had happened between her and her husband? Why had she moved away from their dad? Why Coal Haven?

None of those answers were my business, though, and she wasn’t acting like she wanted to chat. I opened the door and got out, but turned back, my arms braced on the doorframe. “Call if you need anything. My number should be on the sheet Landon brought home on the first day.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks.”

She nodded. I nodded.

Okay. So. That was all there was between us. I shut the door and waved as she drove off, like I wasn’t steeped in confusion about why I wanted to get to know Emery more after a quickie in my back seat when she was giving off zero vibes about wanting more.

I knew when a woman was done with me. I didn’t need to relive the pain from nine years ago.
