“Thank you for explaining.” I ran a key through my fingers, noting the dips and the cool touch of the metal. I’d been so intent on leaving but my keys weren’t even in the ignition. “See you at the game.”

“What are you doing now?”

I might be dressed to be out, but I wasn’t feeling it anymore. I’d gone from flying to sinking low. “I’m going home to watch a movie.”

He didn’t back away. “Sounds nice.”

I waited for him to tell me good night, to go back into the restaurant and keep the night going with Holly. But he didn’t. And I didn’t want him to. “Avery’s probably still up. Mom might stay and visit for a little. We don’t get much time to talk without constant interruption.”

“What movie?”

I studied him. What was he getting at? He wasn’t asking me to stay. I wouldn’t go back into Rattler’s tonight. Another night, maybe, when it wouldn’t bea thingafter the way I’d breezed out. “I don’t know. Avery’s eleven, so it opens up a few more options for us.” He wasn’t making a move to go. It was like he wanted to stay with me. “Do you want to watch it with us?” I asked out of curiosity, but it came out sounding like an invitation.

“You mind?” His expression turned hopeful.

“What?”

“If I watch a movie with you?”

The smothering excitement from earlier threatened to return, but I couldn’t handle it again. Topping off that peak hurt. I gave him another chance to back out. “With my daughter and maybe my mom?”

“I’m not doing anything else tonight. I’d just go home once you leave otherwise.”

He was ditching Rattler’s and his buddies and the girls no matter what? He’d chased me out of the restaurant when he could’ve called. He’d messed up and immediately owned up to it. That was new for me. “O-okay. Just let me warn my mom.”

“What’s her name?”

“Lynnie.”

He gave me a quick smile and straightened to close the door. “I’ll meet you there.”

He closed me into the car, but it was a full minute before I put the key in the ignition. How had the night flip-flopped like that?
