“Can you see how much it’s changed?” she called to him.

“Looks the same to me,” he said. “Go right.”

She made the first right and saw that there were now three more possible turns, not just the two Tiago had seen before, and three times as many as the one she had seen from the hillside.

“Left,” Tiago called out to her.

She turned and saw two more openings, but waited for him to yell to her which way to go.

It was relatively slow going, but Tiago shouted out instructions with a steady confidence that made her think that he could only see the correct option from his place on the hillside.

By the time she stepped out on the other side of the maze, she had attuned herself to his voice so that she could jog and barely had to slow down before making the turns.

“Yes,” she yelled. “Time?”

“Eleven minutes so far,” Oberon said instantly.

“So far?” she asked, panting.

“Only one of you is through the maze,” he pointed out.

“Right,” she said. “Come on, Tiago, I’ll guide you.”

“Can you even see?” he shouted up.

“I remember,” she yelled back.

“Seriously?”

“Come on,” she called impatiently. “In and then right.”

He wasn’t yelling to her anymore, so she figured he was in.

“Next turn is a left,” she yelled, hoping the maze would at least hold the shape it had when she was in it. Since she couldn’t see what he was up to it didn’t seem sporting for it to work otherwise.

A few minutes later, she could hear his footsteps as she called out the turns.

At last, he burst out of the stalks, laughing.

“Yes,” she yelled again. “Time?”

“Seventeen minutes,” Oberon announced. “A new record.”

She pumped her fist and did a little celebration dance.

“How did you do that?” Tiago demanded, running a hand through his long, dark hair.

She shrugged.

“Did you write it down or something?” he asked.

“I’ve spent my life trying to pick up choreography on the fly,” she said. “I guess I just remember a lot of physical stuff like that.”

“Wow,” he said.

“But don’t ask me to do math in my head or anything,” she warned him with a self-deprecating laugh.

“Don’t do that,” he said, straightening up and fixing her with a very serious look.
