“Give me a first name,” Oberon said. “I can’t confirm or deny another person’s participation, but if they are in the program, I’ll connect you.”

She thought as quickly as possible. Haven might well be out of here already, Piper certainly was.

“Naomi,” she ventured.

“One moment,” Oberon said.

A disc appeared on the table in front of her and a hologram lifted from it.

“Naomi,” Alexis breathed hopefully.

“Alexis,” Naomi said with a smile. “It’s great to see you.”

Alexis drank in the sight of one of her closest friends.

Naomi was a statuesque goddess - tall, with dark hair and a serene expression that masked her mischievous personality. Right now, she was curled up on a floating sofa, wearing a long white dress and holding what looked like a mug of tea.

“Peppermint?” Alexis guessed.

“Always,” Naomi said with a smile. “They’re keeping me well stocked while I wait.”

“You’ve been here longer than I have,” Alexis breathed. “Why?”

“I’m starting to think my intended got cold feet,” Naomi said, shrugging. “But I can’t quite bring myself to care when I’m on an all-expenses paid vacation here.”

Alexis laughed with her, but she could see the tension in the line on Naomi’s normally smooth brow. Her friend was feeling anxious to get the process over with.

“How’s it going for you?” Naomi asked, changing the subject. “Has your match arrived?”

“Yes,” Alexis sighed.

“He’s awful?” Naomi guessed.

“Worse,” Alexis said.

“What could be worse than that?” Naomi laughed.

“He’s wonderful,” Alexis said.

“Oh,” Naomi said, her eyes widening slightly. “Yeah, I guess that could be a problem.”

There was no use denying how she was feeling. It was better to just cut right to the heart of it.

“I don’t think I can do this,” Alexis admitted quietly.

“Would you have to, um, you know?” Naomi asked, quirking an eyebrow.

“We did,” Alexis said. “We do.”

“Oh wow, you already did,” Naomi said, looking impressed. “When do you find out if it worked?”

“It didn’t,” Alexis said. “We have to keep trying.”

“So, you have time for him to realize these feelings are mutual,” Naomi said. “That’s good.”

“If he wanted a partner, he’d have one,” Alexis said, shaking her head. “He’s famous on his home planet. He just wants the baby.”

“What’s it like spending time with him?” Naomi asked.
