“Because I don’t want to let you in.”

“Why not?”

She lowered her gaze. “I don’t let anyone in.”

I tucked a finger under her chin and redirected her gaze to me. “I promise not to let you down if you let me in.”

The pain in her eyes was almost tangible. “Don’t make a promise you can’t keep.”

My lips butterflied across hers. “I have every intention of keeping my promise.”

Her breath caught in her throat as I captured her lips with my own. She was still hesitant; I could tell by the way she had her lips firmly sealed together. It was another way she was keeping me out. When she breathed into me, I pressed my advantage and dipped my tongue into her mouth. That’s when I felt her succumb to me, just as she had the night before.

I wasn’t one to leap into anything headfirst. I liked to know what I was getting into before I got in too deep, but this was the second mind-blowing kiss I’d shared with her and I knew that I could lose myself in her very easily. I was barely holding onto my self-control, and if we had been alone, I would have easily released it.

Olivia broke the kiss first. I could see how flushed she was as she huffed out a breath. Without a word, she turned back to the track. At first, I thought she was rejecting me, but then she laced her fingers between mine. She was certainly a woman of few words.

“Thank you for a wonderful day.”

We were standing in the car park at Venice Beach and I looked around dubiously. “Are you sure I can’t drop you at home?”

She shook her head. “My car’s here.” She pointed to the old cream-coloured car at the other end of the lot.

“At least let me walk you to your car.”

“Alright.”

We walked along side-by-side. She was schooling her features, making it hard for me to tell what she might be thinking, or even if today was a success. One thing I could tell about her was that there was an ingrained sadness that seemed to emanate from her. I wondered why. The psych inside me wanted to help her heal from whatever it was.

“Is your head still battling with you?” I asked.

Olivia sighed. “Yes, I’m afraid so. Please don’t take it personally because I’m always warring with it. I honestly had an incredible day with you, and last night was amazing, too. The way you are and the way you . . .” she trailed off and bit her lip, and I knew she was thinking about our kiss. “Anyway, thank you. I’m sure you’ll want this back.” She took her cap off and held it out to me.

I wrapped my hand around hers. “No, it’s a gift. Keep it.”

With a small smile of gratitude, she hugged the cap to her chest.

I caressed her wrist and traced my fingers up her arm, leaving goosebumps in my wake. Her eyes fluttered closed and she let out a tiny sigh when my hand reached her neck. I inched closer to her. She leaned into me so I was cradling her head in my hand.

“I’m not sure what’s happening,” she whispered.

I pulled her to me. “Don’t listen to your head.”

“Emmett.”

My name on her lips made my resolve crumble. I tugged her mouth to mine and my tongue was dancing with hers instantly. Her arms moved around my shoulders. Her fingers roamed through my hair and dug into my scalp. I held her tiny body flush against my own as my hands explored her hips and ass. I turned her and pressed her up against the hood of her car. I wanted to fuck her on it. I wanted her screaming my name, to see her body tremble as I gave her the best fucking orgasm of her life. But I knew if I did that, I’d never see her again. I couldn’t let that happen. So, as difficult as it was, I reined myself back in and broke off the kiss.

“Emmett,” Olivia moaned.

“No,” I groaned. “Not here. I won’t embarrass you, sweetheart. I won’t let you do something you’ll regret.”

Olivia’s eyes went wide. She was coming back to her senses, and shewasembarrassed.

“Hey.” I wouldn’t dare let her up off the bonnet until I made myself clear. I didn’t want to hurt her. I cupped her face in one of my hands. “I want this. I want you. But I want to do this right. You deserve to be respected. Make no mistake, Olivia; I want to see you again.”

Olivia pushed me and I let her up. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”
