The movement of Emmett’s fingers through my hair ceased. “How did he change?”

“He got defensive and aggressive . . . a little bit violent. He never actually laid a hand on me, but he would overpower me until he had me in tears.” Tears welled in my eyes. “Then I learned that he was involved in drugs. He wasn’t an addict; he was a dealer. The reason he told me never to touch the drugs was because he didn’t want his woman to become an addict. He’s the son of one of the biggest drug lords in Columbia, and Miguel was the head of his Los Angeles cartel. When he went to Columbia for his dad’s birthday, I stayed behind because Charlie had a temperature and was too sick to travel. I used the time to change my name to my grandmother’s maiden name and disappear into the streets of L.A. Eventually, my father-in-law died and Miguel had to move back to Columbia to become the head of the business there. His people found me and served me with divorce papers, which I was happy about, but he wanted to take Charlie from me and raise him in that world. I used my life savings to get myself a fantastic lawyer and he lost the custody battle. Using all my money meant I had to find a job here, but with a baby to take care of, I could never save enough to get back home. Eventually, I got used to our way of life and here we are.”

Emmett got to his feet and began pacing. He rubbed his hand down his face. “Jesus Christ! Why the fuck didn’t your dad help you? Or your mom? Why did your parents abandon you?”

I sat up and let my legs hang over the edge of the bed. “Dad cares more about his career than anything else. Mum had babies of her own; she couldn’t afford a plane ticket any more than I could. Those kids aren’t much older than Charlie.”

“I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. I know it’s a big step for you to tell me so much.”

I stood and let him take my hands. “You know what though, Emmett?”

“What?”

“I feel happy when I’m around you, too. I want to put my trust in you.”

The smile Emmett gave me was wonderful. No one had smiled at me like that for a long time. Emmett kissed me again and I sank against him.
