“Sure.”

“No more being mean to Emmett.”

“Okay.”

“And you need to do your schoolwork. You’ve only got two more weeks until summer. I don’t want you to fall behind now.”

“Okay, I promise to do those things. I can’t wait for summer!” Charlie said as he clapped his hands together.

“Me, either!” I agreed.

“Have you finished brushing your teeth, Charlie?”

“Yeah!”

I heard the tap run for a moment. “Good work.”

He came back into my bedroom on his crutches as I dashed around collecting the last few things I would need for the two of us. I pushed them into our bags and zipped them up. I dropped a hat on his head. “Let’s go.”

Picking up my six-year-old handbag and my keys, I double-checked everything once more and then we made our way out to the car. I loaded the trunk and helped my son into the front seat.

Latisha stepped out of her apartment with furrowed eyebrows. “Hey, girl, are you going on vacation?”

“Something like that.” I grinned. “We’re going to stay in Santa Barbara.”

“For how long?”

I shrugged. “Maybe for the summer. Maybe longer.”

She walked toward us, her hands on her hips. “Does this have anything to do with that sexy piece of ass that’s been keeping you and your boy company these past few weeks?”

“Yeah, Charlie’s close to losing his mind. I’m hoping the change of scenery and more room to move might help him in his recovery. Not that he can move too much yet, but he’s getting there.”

We both glanced at my son.

“Hey there, Charlie.” Latisha waved at him.

“Hey, Latisha.”

Latisha turned our backs to Charlie’s line of sight. “So, things with this sexy guy, they’re good?”

“Yeah, they are.”

Latisha took in my sincere expression. “Well then, I’m super happy for you, Olivia. Don’t be coming back here anytime soon. You deserve to live an amazing life. I mean that.”

“So, do you, Teesh. Please say you and the kids will come and visit us?”

“You don’t need to worry about us. Concentrate on you and your son and that hot new man of yours.”

I arched my eyebrows at her. “Woman, when I send you the address, you’d better get your arse out there for a beach barbeque, you hear me?”

“Okay, fine.”

We both giggled and hugged.

“Hey, kids! You get out here and say goodbye to Charlie and his mom. They’re going away for a while!”
